If you're in North America, are you ready for the solar eclipse? AP has everything you need to know about the April 8 event: https://flip.it/g-qy.m

If you're in the path, do you plan to view the eclipse? Tell us why in a reply.

justinw,

@ScienceDesk I wanted to watch it, but my local library ran out of glasses. I was redirected to an info sheet, about how to make my own, but I don’t trust my terrible making abilities to construct something that doesn’t accidentally blind me.

Fun fact, one time the asshole dude who started the Alamo Drafthouse movie theater chain threatened me to a fistfight because I suggested that norms for attending screenings of movies could evolve over time and people shouldn't be dogmatic about them. https://botsin.space/@kottke/111029987690344662

justinw,

@anildash The response is wrong, of course, and I agree with your idea, that norms can change. I would argue that the reason norms changed from dropping in & out of screenings, is that films, on the whole, weren’t recognized as a true art form yet. There were always exceptions, but it took awhile for the general public to take film seriously. People who recognize the concentration art can entail (not trying to be snobby, I love films of all kinds), bemoan what is happening as devolution.

Is it bad karma that causes one to be reborn as a woman?

justinw,

@obu Not going to read the article. The question itself is sexist, and offensive. Not trying to be one of those outrage people, but I think you can do better.

The surgeon general just went on TV to tell Morning Joe social media is dangerous to youth.
Fifty-one years ago, the surgeon general contended television was dangerous to youth. In both cases, they talk correlation, not causation.
And forty years ago, the surgeon general was contending the video games were dangerous to youth.

justinw,

@jeffjarvis Understand the point you’re making. Danger argument is largely bogus. But there have been no cases of TV causing, at the very least, suicidal ideation in teens the way SM has been shown to do. Never bought video games cause violence cries either. But, there is no question mass shootings have increased in the years since violent video games appeared. For a variety of reasons, obviously. I think it is worth it to study its impact. These things don’t happen in a vacuum.
