It occurs to me that this last 1/2 century or so has been globally pretty peaceful. And I wondered if it might even be one of the MOST peaceful 50 years we’ve had....
World War 2 vastly overshadows all other conflicts. Something like 3.7% of the global population died. Some individual countries lost more than 10% of their populations. No other conflict, or group of regional conflicts, comes anywhere close.
I wish the graph in the link had an option to normalize by population. I bet a graph of war deaths as a percent of global population would look very peaceful over the past 50 years.
Since becoming a parent my nightmares all involve my kids being harmed: crashing their bicycles, getting hit by cars, falling and hitting their heads, etc. It’s awful.
I had never seen one of these before today. They’re great. Way better than reaching for a single pole in a crowded car and wrapping your hand around some stranger’s fingers. And If you have the whole thing to yourself you can hook your arm through it.
Say out loud to yourself, “What the hell is this?” or, “Why did they do it this way?” once in a while. Everyone around will think you know exactly what you’re doing.
I was excited to ride to work today in the sunny spring weather. Then I saw the wind forecast. No thank you, I’ll pass. I ride directly into the wind on my commute home, and am completely exposed the whole way....
For 23 days in the Manhattan Criminal Courthouse, much of this trial has become familiar to both Trump and the reporters who cover him.
For Trump, it began each day with his motorcade ride to the courthouse, followed by remarks to the media, then a prompt start to the proceedings at 9:30 a.m… Every morning his lawyers introduced him as “President Trump,” and every morning Judge Merchan greeted him back as just “Mr. Trump.”
I had no idea Trump was getting burned by the judge every day of the trial.
And the someone else they sold to was crooked, too:
… majority shareholder Thai Union Group, which is also their main seafood supplier, might have pushed the shrimp promotion in order to boost their own sales at the cost of the retailer’s finances. This ownership structure between parties that are supposed to be on opposite sides of restaurant transactions does appear to be a clear conflict of interest.
The bit about the “Codfather” who went to prison for price fixing and dealing with the Russian mob was interesting, too. Wonderful people all around in this story.
I second the idea of looking for a bike co-op. Or even ask at small shops if they would be interested in teaching you. I have known mechanics who would happily stay after hours to help people who wanted to learn. In either place you will have access to the right tools and a wealth of knowledge.
The photo was from a site that no longer seems to be up. The pedal on the right, measuring at 15.7mm is the same size that the pedal on my indoor spin bike uses and I want to use standard 9/16 threaded pedals instead....
I think the right pedal has a Unior thread adapter on it. These are used to repair a stripped crank arm. When the 9/16"x20 threads strip out you ream the hole and re-tap it with a 5/8"x24 thread, then and use the adapter to make the pedals fit.
I've got this idea baking because I saw a guy post that it's been as many year from 1971 to 2024 as it was from 1971 to 1918. How do the global wars compare in the two periods?
