Dublin 15, Ireland. Nobody wants to read what I write once they’ve read what I’ve written. I assuredly will write it. I also post occasionally about coding, bird-feeding, photos of things, cycling, and drawing (once in a while).

I architect and develop web systems to move data for a very big non-commercial organisation. I'd love to make something that improves the world for everyone though. Maybe one day?

Good news! Eardrum repaired! No hearing aids for another few months although I’m impatient for them now.

Going to lift some heavy things as a treat. Can fly too, but still no swimming for another two months. Audio isn’t great, but the surgeon did fire in some gunk to help with healing and I guess the ear has to adjust to not being plugged too.

Fine Gael Councillor candidate Steve O’Reilly has today both posted and had hand-delivered the same grovelling appeal letter to give him my no. 1 vote, highlighted in yellow on the page and a patronising graphic on the other side to show how to do this. He should get a free seat just for effort.

John Cullen over on Bluesky spent the day installing Linux on an old laptop. It seems to have been absolute hell and he’s moderately technical but he succeeded eventually. He’s happy now, if scarred by the experience.

Reminds me of getting Linux going on my Mac in 1997, but now there’s USB and flash drives.

Stealing a reply from elsewhere: The number one local issue in Dublin 15 has become immigration, for people who are barely allowed to get a look in on how the parks are looked after. The dividing line between MEP and local candidate has blurred heavily.

i'm still undecided as to the merits of various text editors, but i checked out Helix and it's sort of heartbreaking how excited they seem about it being a Chromium base... something that is, for me, a negative

if you have a favorite text editor with a GUI (sorry i'm not ready to launch into the vimlikes yet) i'd love to hear it though! i feel like i just use atom, brackets or (vs)code(or the OSS version) out of habit rather than particularly liking any of them

@lucky I’m picky about my editors, and for all its faults I settled into Atom because I could mould it into what I wanted. But it died and I moved to the (by then) good VS Code. I tried Nova (a Mac native editor) but it’s too much work to customise, and the UI is a bit heavy. Still check out others every now and then though, even if through force of habit.

It’s amazing the influence that Textmate has had on all of these. They all want to be Textmate 2.0 (which existed, but is extinct).
