Tratnik lost his brave fight against the hungry Frenchmen behind and #Giro2024 stage 16 lost Stelvio to the risk of avalanches. Sometimes you need to take 3rd / Umbrailpass.
Today, a climbing challenge awaits sprinters and their teams. I think a strong breakaway can be avoided, the stage is long and many will save the legs for tomorrow, but the "bumps" (up to 8.4 km, 5.4%), boosted by breeze (side/tail), could definitely cause the likes of Ewan to lose contact on a bad day.
This is an interesting article on road.cc about the issues around the #cycling industry and nosediving profits.
It mentions "In very basic terms, pandemic = bike boom, bike boom = brands purchasing more stock to meet demand, pandemic ends and demand drops = less buyers for said stock, less buyers = stock sitting on shelves unsold. In short, not good."
But I would add this would not be an issue if... 1/2

...if we went back to the old days where bicycle products did not have a shelf life, with new generations of equipment being released annually. You don't need a 2024 groupset if you can still change gears like it's 1999. The industry got itself into a fast fashion mindset rather than actual product improvements or repairing things only when broken.
@kevinteljeur Yeah, there's definitely an element of them looking with envy at other industries' unrestrained growth. And now they stand to lose their core markets as the golfers return to their clubs, and the pandemic boomers return to sitting in cars shouting at the world.
Obviously I don't want Man City to win tonight, and a draw would be enough to allow #AstonVilla finish fourth. So that's what I want. Now, Pep, make it happen
Got a local political flyer in the door. All the usual dog whistles; no-go areas, war on motorists etc. For example, he wants to allow private vehicles use bus lanes. Consigning everyone to driving. I mean it's all really stupid stuff, but the overtones struck me.
He's running for local council but all policies are individualistic and against civic spirit. They are all "I'm alright" and anti progress.
@incredibish this guy is arguing for both, but particularly cars. Motorcycles are technically not allowed use the bus lanes but a blind eye is mostly turned to this.
@incredibish as with all these things, it's down to enforcement... Currently very little of that anyway here in Dublin. Buses jammed by private drivers in bus lanes, so we've to upgrade the roads and make it easier for buses, then drivers are giving out because the roads are being changed.
This is addressing the elephant in the room in a number of recent fatal car accidents: https://www.thejournal.ie/seatbelt-silencers-ireland-6367290-May2024/ - Mick's Garage specifically getting called out here. If you're doing less than Amazon for buyer safety, you need to take a look at yourself.
@kevinteljeur at least 28% of fatalities in cars were not wearing seatbelts. What? I just put it on automatically when I get into a car. Who are these stupid people? It's very hard to have any sympathy for someone who dies if they didn't wear something that would have saved them
On LinkedIn: I was very saddened to hear of the death of this person who worked to end child slavery and the turning of human remains into vitamin sludge drinks. In honour of their life's work we are offering 5% off the first month of our vitamin sludge subscription.
Replies on LinkedIn: Wow, what a touching gesture, so moving. And a concidence, our product, ThingYouDontNeed, is also 5% off this week!
For some reason we seem to be at the that regular cyclical event of talking heads in the media doing the "but cyclists..." thing. The last paragraphs in this article seem salient
