I am a polite software developer and I am always committed to the bit. I will be your favorite app maker’s favorite app maker.

I am enamored by user-facing software, especially mobile, and especially iOS. Swift is my current weapon of choice but I will use any made-up word to solve any problem. I ship my side projects for free.

I run this single-user Mastodon instance in good faith and I intend to keep it that way.

This profile is from a federated server and may be incomplete. Browse more on the original instance.

Meeting many of my Internet friends in person – especially the fellas – and making many new ones at Deep Dish Swift was one of the best experiences of my life. I’m tearing up a little typing this. I’ve avoided in-person developer communities ever since college; too self-serious for my taste. That mindset carried through to this community even though I know it’s a self-selecting group of people that I have vibed with for a long time.

Before this trip I would have been tough on myself for “wasting” the last decade of my career by depriving myself of this feeling. But now, I think I just need to make a concerted effort over the next decade and I will have found good balance over 20 years.

Thank you so much to everyone that made the experience possible and helped me learn this. Especially the astroturfing campaigns that convinced me to go. Ethically questionable but ultimately necessary.

@colinhumber You’ve got to try to go! I wasn’t going as of 3 days before the conference and now I’m absolutely going to make it back next year. Succumb to the peer pressure like I did and this high will sustain you for a long time. I’ll see you there 😉

@mergesort my guy(s) 🫶🏻

kyle,

@joshdholtz @colinhumber hmm, peer pressure is pretty fun…

kyle,
@kyle@mister.computer avatar

@reftonull @mergesort On one hand: one of my favorite new people I met. On the other hand: forced me to confront my own mortality. Impossible to say if it was worth it.

kyle,
@kyle@mister.computer avatar

@MuseumShuffle @fireatwill It was really easy: we were ⅔ of the people standing up at the performance 😠

Is anyone I know that’s going to Deep Dish involved in any group activity or meal that isn’t already full 👀

@charliemchapman @MuseumShuffle Not getting in until 5 PM. Flying east, time zones, etc.

I’ve been saying it all along: I’ll see you in Chicago.

It’s right about that time where I think, “maybe I should have gone to that conference.”

@kyle@mister.computer avatar

@thillsman yeah but, you know, I mean,

@thillsman @mergesort @joshdholtz @mergesort I don’t think it’s realistic now 🥲 silly joke

Traveling with Vision Pro raised some existential questions about experiencing my own life. Do I ever need to be that distracted while traveling? Even if I’m alone in a hotel room, is it better to make a memory in that space than hide away in Mount Hood? When I read a book on an airplane I have a memory of reading a book on an airplane. With Vision Pro, even without the immersive environment, I just have a memory of watching Creed in my entire field of view. I don’t know.

This is a semi-spicy thought exercise so I haven't given it that much thought, but why do we need LLMs to automatically write documentation if you can use LLMs to generate docs on the fly? It's the same class of problem where people want to use LLMs to write larger emails which look more businessy, emails that will be summarized by the recipient anyway. Why not skip the whole snake eating its tail part of the documentation workflow where people generate docs that no one will read anyway?

kyle,
@kyle@mister.computer avatar

@mergesort Because I only want problems to be solved perfectly in ways that are personally satisfying and, barring that, I’d rather they not be solved.

Men, it’s getting dangerously close to summer fits and I don’t feel like we’ve locked down how we’re wearing our socks. What’s up?

I’ve just kind of ignored passkeys because they seem opaque, onerous, and coupled. It is not obvious why I want authentication to be magical instead of explicit and knowable. It is not obvious why I should change the foundation of my threat model for my digital identity that has never failed in 25 years. As far as I can tell, the introduction of passkeys just made me click more cancel boxes when logging into websites. Bound to be a little sour on them.

kyle,
@kyle@mister.computer avatar

It feels like passkeys were rolled out by the precocious teenager that I used to be. I would always try to get my parents on the latest and greatest technology with no regard for their discomfort or the problems they were and were not aware of; I had no interest in meeting them where they were.

These days, if there’s something really important – like avoiding crypto – I’ll put on a whole campaign. Otherwise, I’m not going to burn my energy or their patience.

We were destined to ascribe intelligence to the first artificial thing that seemed to talk back to us. Just like how we see faces everywhere, it is no one’s fault but evolution.

Genuinely not sure if I can be the Vision Pro Airplane Guy. Oscillating wildly. Panicking.
