For about a week I tried to sign up for a new account on a website. It fails every time with a generic error and says try again later.

The registration form stated the user ID can contain a specified list of special characters including (, ), and @. Getting frustrated with continued failure, I formed a theory that the web developers were idiots—as they often are—so I tried removing the special characters from my user ID. Lo and behold, registration finally worked, thus confirming my theory.
