Bugs always happen in major .0 releases. That’s perfectly understandable.

But here’s what bothers me about Apple nowadays:

  1. Apple keeps pushing out major .0 releases every single year, a nonstop schedule of new bugs.

  2. Software quality doesn’t improve 8-12 months after .0 versions, because Apple is always working on the next major version and also inexplicably pushing out new features year round in the current version, thus introducing even more bugs.

I waited 8 months to install Sonoma, and it’s still buggy as hell! There are no “stable” versions anymore.

TIL geese can hiss at you.

I was out walking and came upon families of geese with a bunch of children, so they couldn’t just fly away. The adults hissed at me like cats.

To forestall the obvious question, no, I don’t have photos or video, because believe it or not, I like to go out and walk without my smartphone.

It was a little scary to be honest but also pretty cool. That may be the closest I’ve ever gotten to geese.

Bad news, everyone!

Apple has ghosted me since that 2 minutes phone call, I’ve received 0 emails about the issue, and the Apple representative hasn’t responded to my follow-up phone inquiry, which went straight to voicemail. https://mastodon.social/@lapcatsoftware/112447862295649046

I've been using https://DuckDuckGo.com as my default search for years now. It's fine.

DDG supports a special !g keyword that redirects the search to Google, so I can easily get a second opinion when DDG isn't finding what I want.

lapcatsoftware,
@lapcatsoftware@mastodon.social avatar

@kornel DuckDuckGo is basically a frontend for Microsoft Bing. DDG went down the other day when Bing did.

lapcatsoftware,
@lapcatsoftware@mastodon.social avatar

@kornel They are Microsoft’s ads. I actually looked into advertising on DDG once, and I had to sign up for a Microsoft account. DDG doesn’t actually sell its own ads.

@lapcatsoftware Hi Jeff, I’d really love a way to be able to temporarily enable JavaScript with Stop the Script. Thanks!

lapcatsoftware,
@lapcatsoftware@mastodon.social avatar

@RobW Did you mean temporarily disable JavaScript?

lapcatsoftware,
@lapcatsoftware@mastodon.social avatar

@RobW StopTheScript does depend essentially on the built-in Safari extensions permission system. The way it works, that’s unavoidable.

You don’t have to delete the page, though. You can just toggle from “Allow” to “Deny”.

lapcatsoftware,
@lapcatsoftware@mastodon.social avatar

@RobW No, the way it works, it has to be all or nothing.

It might be faster though to select Manage Extensions from the Safari toolbar and just disable the extension.

It’s extremely frustrating how apartment builders don’t give any consideration about noise from neighbors.

For about a week I tried to sign up for a new account on a website. It fails every time with a generic error and says try again later.

The registration form stated the user ID can contain a specified list of special characters including (, ), and @. Getting frustrated with continued failure, I formed a theory that the web developers were idiots—as they often are—so I tried removing the special characters from my user ID. Lo and behold, registration finally worked, thus confirming my theory.

Good news, everyone!

I just received a phone call from an Apple representative. They confirmed that there was indeed a software bug in the bundle pricing calculation, which was fixed yesterday. They also said that affected developers, such as myself, would be compensated for our lost revenue.

That’s all I know for now. I was told that I would also be receiving a follow-up email later.

The conversation was pleasant, and the Apple representative was very nice about it.

A lot of people seem to think that large corporations are competent because they make a ton of money.

In fact the opposite is true. Every layer of bureaucracy adds a layer of incompetence to a company. They usually create their best products when they’re much smaller, capture a market, and then cash in on that market for decades, in the process becoming less and less competent over time. Success and size breed incompetence, attract it like flies to shit.

Extreme wealth provides shelter to incompetence. Money can hide a lot of flaws.
