there's a layer of corporate people who are interested in virtual presence in meetings, because for them meetings are not about information or problem solving, but about signaling and self-presentation. being seen at the meeting is much more important than the content. also, seeing their underlings at a meeting gives them some sense of power as well. their problem to solve is "how can I be more visible at all times"

lots of people don't mind if there's not a meeting agenda because what they care about is the attendants list. are important people on this meeting? then I must go, I must get an invite. Is my boss on this meeting? Is my bosses' boss? then I have to go. What can I say in this meeting to look smart, to look like I know what I'm talking about? All those considerations are very independent from the content. I wish I could tell you this doesn't matter, but clearly it does, for them.

if you're autistic this sounds absolutely bananas. no one will ever tell you this is what's really happening, you have to guess somehow. you tell your boss "I didn't go because I had nothing to say" and they'll interpret you don't care about this whole very important secret game they are playing.

I guess I should also say that if you want to be promoted or get any kind of recognition or power in a corporate structure, you have to play at least a little. the rules are nonsense and change all the time tho. forget about doing any real work during the game.

@schwa probably! these week long offsites is where people "see" you, casually. you're not supposed to get anything out of it other than being recognized by face and recognize others. this has a disproportionate effect on how people talk about/to you, how they evaluate your work in the future, and how and when they consider you for a promo or a cool project etc. i see them as part of the job, and try to limit them but still have to do it sometimes especially because I manage people.
