Gute Nacht, Freunde.

Had a fairly good day. Wrote a few hundred words for Sun (I suppose I dread shoving him into the next trouble), survived the office day.

I started on fixing my email integrations (that was a bit of a shock, to find out they no longer work) and I made it through a few chapters of Newsletter Ninja.

Then I played Valheim, and what was meant to be some fun exploring turned into a full-out disaster. Got it fixed, eventually... 😬 😂

#WritersCoffeeClub 4/17. What genre(s) would you be terrible at writing?

I don't really like plotting, it kills all the joy in writing the story. So I doubt I could write good thrillers or mysteries that rely on plotting.

On the other hand, I do like to challenge myself somewhat with the stories I dive into. And I might not be good at those, but I do it anyway. (The Franssisi Four Chronicles are an example.)

On the other hand, I love fantasy and think I'm good at that.

Oh, that's awesome!

Very good to hear. Maybe I'll try some mystery elements myself. 🙂

(But yeah, I hear you on the editing...)

Really good article about the realities of writing in the 21st century:

@ashtardeza

Yeah, well. A $300,000 advance no longer happens unless you already have some kind of fame. (Oprah?)

$3,000 is more likely for genre authors in traditional publishing. And remember, that's a one-time payment.

I know several indie authors who earn that much per month with their books (or much more!). That's a goal for me that no publisher can help me reach.

And the final paragraph is just... incredibly depressing.

Firlefanz,
@Firlefanz@writing.exchange avatar

@ashtardeza

That is true.

Even so, I believe that handing your IP to a trad publisher is the worst thing you can do these days.

I know too many authors who had a huge fight on their hands to get their books back after a publisher folded. Some never did.

And really, the big Five are run by investment companies now, so what do you expect?

17: What personal expertise makes it into your books?

All of my life, really.

But if you're asking for specific subjects, here's a list:

Archaeology (studied it for a few semesters)

Psychology (ran my own therapy practice for ten years)

Horses and riding (several years of lessons)

Sailing (I know how to sail a boat and North got on one)

Reading (started at 6, dove right in, never looked back)

And there's more I'm forgetting.

Gute Nacht, Freunde.

Making slow progress in small steps. Sorting through a stack of papers I had no energy to deal with. For once, cooking something today.

Reading another chapter of the Newsletter Ninja. Actually hopping on FB to show my presence there.

Lots of Valheim. Preparing for the boss fight, and also getting distracted by exploring and hauling home ore. Not that I really need it...

Not in a good space right now.

16.04. Was war das Schlimmste, was deine Hauptfigur in ihrem Leben bisher tun musste?

Sun musste seinem besten Freund, gefühlt seinem Bruder, beim Sterben zusehen. Ohne irgendetwas dagegen tun zu können.

Dieser Moment verfolgt ihn noch immer. Eigentlich hätte er Moon am nächsten Tag folgen sollen, aber seine Magie hatte etwas anderes mit ihm vor...

Yep. I mean, Amazon is sometimes bad about it, but you can grab it elsewhere and mail it to your Kindle.

Have fun with it! ❤️

The day when you take the achievement snatched from many year's of precious spare time moments, put on a cover & upload it to bookstores.

I'm there with epic book 3/3 in my debut trilogy, and sad to let these beautiful, , characters and the found family they made go.

With this book, I pushed my ability to plot a complex, multi-civilisation conflict to its limits.

I loved every bit of it. I hope some of you do too.

Gute Nacht, Freunde.

Anxiety got the better of me today.

Which led to some intense cleaning (which is rather unlike me), and a lot of Valheim.

I did start reading Newsletter Ninja (again), and I'm telling myself that having to redo all the automations and integrations with MailerLite is a chance to make them much better. Right?

284 What are common traps for new authors?

  1. That just writing the book is enough to get rich.

  2. That traditional publishers make authors rich. (insert bitter laugh)

  3. That a bestseller makes an author rich.

  4. That bestsellers always get made into movies.

  5. That movies make an author rich.

  6. That writing happens best when drunk.

  7. That Book #1 has to be perfect.

And so many more... but really, authors very rarely get rich...

285 — Are there any significant memories that stick with your MC to this day?

Sun will never forget the moment his powers slipped out of control and would have burned their House down if Moon hadn't dampened them instantly.

Ever since, he hasn't fully trusted his powers. But with Moon dead, he no longer has anyone to help him with them - and they burst out of control again at the Sacrifice.

4/15. Describe your perfect writing conditions.

I'm sitting at my desk. The sun is shining, putting me into a good mood. The temperature is at 22°C. There is quiet all around me.

I have snacks, meals are taken care of and nothing urgent is pinging my attention. My brain is awake and happy to focus on my story.

And off I go, the words just fly onto the screen, I'm deep inside the story, at my happy place.

15.4.

Dictionary.com laid off all its lexicographers this month.

Presumably to replace them with AI. (My opinion.)

Sadly, thesaurus.com and dictionary.com are two of my most important resources when writing. I will look for alternatives now, because they basically decided to stop being a good service.

Enshittification is spreading at an ever increasing rate. It makes me sad. I thought we were headed towards a good future. Instead, it's turning... brown. 😬

Article about the sale.

Soon, dictionary.com will no longer be the most trusted site. Without curation, it'll die. But hey, for a while, it'll make money.

Very much that.

And eventually, we'll have curated link-lists again, in old-fashioned author forums, with author tools and such - because neither Google nor other websites will be reliable anymore.

Gute Nacht, Freunde.

Unhappy with MailerLite (they killed all my sign-ups) and with my sales. Also, the newsletter didn't do what I had hoped for...

That means I have my work cut out for me next week - and that made me play Valheim, because it is Sunday. Right? Right!

And I have Sun who is hoping they could make it to safety... won't happen, not now.

Let the next week be good!

4/14: Do you keep a log of incidental characters (e.g. shop assistants) or forget them once they've featured?

I do my best to put them into my series bible.

Of course, I often forget, and then I have to re-read my stories in order to remember and get it all right.

Gute Nacht, Freunde.

Today was Valheim day. My friend had time to play, and that was really, really good. Went exploring by boat.

No writing for Sun, but I wrote a blog post and sent out my newsletter. I think that counts as writing, right?

A very good day, and I'm just happy.

Oh! I found a little statue of a mule and took a picture of it with a certain book. :D
