Hot take, this I’m going to ignore your profile. Because you don’t have a picture thing that seems to be widespread on social media is absolutely ridiculous. Chances are if they have a bio and a suitable number of posts they aren’t a scammer or anything like that, so the presence or absence of a picture should not be a determining factor in whether or not to engage with that individual. I can speak from experience here because I was once thrown out of a group chat for not having a profile picture.

maerlynofmiria,

@evilcookies98 In a situation like that, I'd tell them to take the group and cram it. Ableist as hell what they're doing. As for scammers, they usually put up a stock picture they got from somewhere, so this idea that scammers don't have profile pics is so inaccurate on their part.

maerlynofmiria,

@evilcookies98 Be thankful facebook hasn't made it mandatory to have a profile picture yet.

Defender just ate Tweesecake, what why.

maerlynofmiria,

@shefoof @Tehiverse @Gaptangle What I hate about defender is how it invariably flags games and programs for the blind as Trogens and malware and yet lets some actual threats mozy right past it without it even taking any notice..

maerlynofmiria,

@evilcookies98 @Gaptangle @shefoof @Tehiverse then, though, you'd have your machine constantly bitching at you for not having an anti virus program running.

maerlynofmiria,

@evilcookies98 @Gaptangle @Tehiverse @shefoof Malware bites went inaccessible ten or so years ago. I found that out.

maerlynofmiria,

@Tehiverse @shefoof @evilcookies98 You'd think there'd be safeties in place to prevent that sort of thing, particularly after the Microsoft scam that went on a decade or so back with people who were qulte clearly not from Microsoft calling people randomly and claiming that they knew their machines were infected.

maerlynofmiria,

@evilcookies98 @Tehiverse @Gaptangle @shefoof Oh you meant the user account control thing. Yeah, control palen, user account control, set slider to 0. Accessibility on that slider is down to almost nothing but it's still doable.

Lol I just discovered that Siri now knows when it's being sworn at and has a response for it. It screwed up, I told it fuck you, and it said, and I quote, I won't respond to that. First time ever I've sworn at it and I discover that it's got a response all ready for you when you do. Lol!

@Binder Lol he sued Peter Parker when he found out that Peter Parker and spider-Man were one and the same person.

OK, PayPal, fix whatever it is you've got broken in your system. when I've got $261 in PayPal credit, do not, and I repeat, do, not, decline my transactions when PayPal Credit is a payment option, especially when the purchase is over the minimum of $99 and below the maximum of $261. What one goes through to try getting a new olympus LS100 from EBay using PayPal Credit these days.

maerlynofmiria,

@simon And the main issue I'm having with trying to purchase the one I found is thanks to something broken on PayPal's end, as seems to be the case just lately. my PayPal wallet says I have $261 worth of credit on my PayPal credit. the minimum cost of an item PayPal credit will pay for in my case is $99. the LS100 is $192. It's not below minimum and it's not above maximum, and PayPal credit can be selected as a payment option, but it keeps throwing an error saying my payment didn't go through. Said error message is completely ambiguous, giving no reason at all why the payment failed. It merely says the payment failed with no information what so ever imparted as to why, so there's no way to trace down precisely what's broken.

maerlynofmiria,

@simon As I said, multi track capabilities, true stereo, a combo no other digital recorder on the market has boasted.

Well, UPS had apparently done it again. My roommate and I ordered a bred box from amazon last week, and according to her alexa, the thing was delivered yesterday. Uh, if that's the case, then where the hell is it? The on sight maintenance man was up here twice yesterday after the time alexa gave for the delivery, and he said absolutely nothing about any delivery for my apartment. It also wasn't left out in the hallway, as the box would have been spotted. Same goddamn situation as happened with my microwave two years ago. and I already know that if I call the customer number for UPS, I'll be directed to press 0 to speak to a receptionist, only to be immediately disconnected. And yet, senders can call a totally different number I don't have, and get in touch with a human. Once more, it's all on me to figure out how to clean up this mess UPS has made in its pants. got to love it!

maerlynofmiria,

@simon I did that last time with my microwave when it got misdelivered, and when I say misdelivered, I mean misdelivered multiple times, and amazon passed the buck to UPS. Once Amazon has their money, it's not their problem any more. It's the fault of the delivery service. and I got that directly from the guy at amazon I spoke to. Once it leaves them, it's not their responsibility, according to them. It's all on the company they use to deliver the stuff.

maerlynofmiria,

@simon And to be honest, it is UPS's fault that the bred box is currently not in our hands. they misdelivered the package, not amazon. And Amazon knows it very well. This is why Amazon claims it's not their responsibility once they receive your payment.

maerlynofmiria,

@simon One correction I need to make though. It wasn't last year, it was 2022. I'm still not used to it being 2024.

maerlynofmiria,

@simon BTW, calling amazon achieved absolutely nothing. According to their supposed new policy, they can't call UPS. They can only refund or replace, which means there's every chance the replacement could be misdelivered just as completely as this one. In short, they're expending the minimum amount of effort.

Ok, audible, kindly give a bit of detail with your app updates? I'm so tired of these generic update blurbs that pop up when you update apps these days. they tell me absolutely positively nothing about what the update does for the damn app. Come on, guys, a bit of transparency would be appreciated! Please, app developers, give me that as a christmas gift? Please?

When you load a cD into a computer and itunes opens and it says it's importing audio from the cD, where do you look for the resulting audio files on your computer.

maerlynofmiria,

@simon The person who just tried to rip a cD looked there, and the album isn’t there, and they can’t find it anywhere on the drive. It’s like itunes behaved normally but then didn’t deliver.

maerlynofmiria,

@simon Their iTunes is also popping up a message that it can’t find the music library. How do you fix that?

maerlynofmiria,

@simon They found the album. It put itself in some random folder rather than the music folder without so much as a by your leave.

Found a FLAC copy of the 1982 BBC Radio 4 adaptation of The Lord of the Rings, which I had on 13 CDs in the early 2000's. Some of those CDs were damaged because I played them quite a lot. It's great to have an exact digital duplicate of that. The production really feels ahead of its time; I assumed it was a lot newer until I saw the year as part of the metadata.
Debating on manually editing out all the beginning and end material on each CD and merging it all into an M4B or something. One of the many benefits of lossless is being able to do that without any transcoding.

maerlynofmiria,

@jscholes @simon @KaraLG84 @ladymunch That's because series 6 was based on a book not written by adams, but was produced to celebrate thirty or forty years of Guide.

I wonder if we should discuss the challenge #blind people have making accessible, and more importantly, useful transcripts, to our audience. It either involves assistance from sighted people or a not-so-substantial cost to send to a third party. Yes - you can throw an audio file into Open AI’s Whisper but the results are mixed at best. It takes a lot of time and effort to create a good and useful transcript hence why some creators can’t achieve it. Let’s definitely promote the need - because for sure there is one - but let’s not shame those who can’t as yet. Offer help or if you are a developer, start thinking of how to achieve a solution. https://disabled.social/@A11yAwareness/111399251469014191

maerlynofmiria,

@zersiax @doubletap they're talking about an aI doing transcripts and then having to correct any errors the AI made.
