I only have 1 southern facing window and I currently have my bed up against that wall. May try to rearrange that room to out my big elephant ear and alocacia there.

I keep most of my pants on a multi level shelf by a west facing window with lights. They do ok but would love to find a set up to keep them warmer and better lit.

These are beautiful plants. When you water them, how much water comes out from the bottom and how fast does it happen? Ensuring you have good drainage is key for all plants. This one is probably just in need of brighter light to keep its pretty colors. It may start to look kind of weird until next warm season. I had one and it didn’t make it through the winter inside. Maybe a light will help.

ZZ plant suddenly got zapped? (lemmy.world)

My zz plant was doing okay. Wasn’t growing as quickly as other describe despite living outside in a shady but bright part of my deck in NC USA. Should be getting plenty light and is protected from rain. Then this morning I find it like this. Each stem has a soft brown spot at the base and has fallen over. I cut them off and...

The were solid (not mushy), light colored, and didn’t have a rot smell at all. Same with the rhizomes. The pot does have drainage, but maybe not enough. I also think the soil may have been a bit compacted and it’s possible that water stayed at the surface and never moved downwards

malcriada_lala,
@malcriada_lala@lemmy.world avatar

no but it is possible that a stray got to it. it is outside.

Meter recommendations - light, moisture, ph, etc

I’ve been keeping plants for about 5 years and have not bought any meters to track and test light, moisture, temp, ph, and all that. Are these a necessity? I am starting to think that I need these tools to ever get some of my pants to thrive in my dark home which gets pretty cold in the winter. What do y’all think?

malcriada_lala,
@malcriada_lala@lemmy.world avatar

I have several grow lights, and I think they do a lot of good but I think some of my plants are still not thriving. Many never seem to develop strong and substantial root systems no matter how properly I water them or how much I amend the soil for what they specifically need. I am just starting to fertilize my plants regularly and I feel like getting some of these meters is another way to level-up as a plant parent.

I do bring out many of my plants to live outside in the warm months, but for the more delicate ones I simply leave them by my sunny window + plant light area

malcriada_lala,
@malcriada_lala@lemmy.world avatar

Many never seem to develop strong and substantial root systems no matter how properly I water them or how much I amend the soil for what they specifically need. I have an alocacia zebrina that has only grown about 5 leaves the whole time I’ve had it (about a year) and I’ve read that it’s a fast growing plant once it has enough light and soil. I guess I wanna be more confident about whether the light situation I’ve set up is enough, and I want to feel more confident that my plants are thirsty before I water again. My concern is whether these meters actually work or if they are a gimmick.

malcriada_lala,
@malcriada_lala@lemmy.world avatar

ooo, I’ve never used leca before. Is it hard to keep clean? I have some of my pants in water with pebbles and when I replace the water and clean it out, the smooth surface of the pebbles makes cleaning the gunk pretty easy. The rough surface of leca seems like it would be hard to clean.

malcriada_lala,
@malcriada_lala@lemmy.world avatar

many plants don’t do well with wet roots. self watering pots don’t allow soil to dry out and can cause a variety of issues depending on the plant. I’m surprised to hear you have had luck with a succulent of all things since they don’t need to be watered often.

malcriada_lala,
@malcriada_lala@lemmy.world avatar

Ahh I see. You aren’t using the pots as true self watering pots, instead it sounds like you are using them for easy bottom watering. I have been trying to switch to bottom watering since it’ supposed to encourage strong rootsgrown and my plants seem to refuse to grow strong root systems. Maybe I need to to use your strategy.

This makes no sense to me. Did they provide a reason for choosing Discord of all things? What was wrong with making announcements on Lemmy? Why wouldn’t they choose to make announcements in another federated format in addition and not instead of lemmy? Like, I’m not super tech savvy but I’m sure they could set up an RSS-like feed to send out alerts? IDK

I guess park and jam. Don’t see myself using this as transportation, if that is what you mean by urban skating

I wish people would realize that humans only got to where we are because we are a COMMUNAL species. We developed complex language and tool usage BECAUSE we work together. Being “off the grid” is usually isolationist and therefore extremely dangerous. We need community in order to develop and manage the resources we need to survive.

Are Water Creams a fad or do they have a lasting value?

I have recently tried a water cream for the first time and I really like it. It’s light but does really seem to hydrate my problematic skin. For me, the value is not feeling weighed down and oily, especially with this summer being so hot. But since water creams seem to be a new product (am I wrong on this?), I am wondering if...

malcriada_lala,
@malcriada_lala@lemmy.world avatar

CeraVe carries a moisturizing/hydrating cleanser in liquid and bar form that I think you will like. It feels creamy and doesn’t dry out the skin like other cleansers.

I have sensitive inflammation-prone skin and must have a low-level degree on dermatology at this point LOL. I like using CreaVe products since they are a good price and have good simple ingredient lists. My dermatologist approves of these products too, which is nice. If you can spend a little extra, you can also try La Roche Posay’s hydrating cleaser too. Very nice quality products.

I hate that this is true, but if someone has chosen to switch and they can afford to do so, than they should. They just shouldn’t think that that’s where their power starts and ends. Real change doesn’t come from our wallets.

It’s possible that the products you are using don’t work well together and are flaking once dry. I think this happens when one product is negatively charged and the other is positively charged. This is why some people prefer to use products from the same line since they are often designed to work well together.

It’s hard to give specific advice without knowing what your hair is like in it’s natural state. Is your frizz caused by humidity or do you think the frizz is caused by scrunching your hair and the products not holding your hair well enough?

Your breakfasts are so healthy compared to the American breakfast. The fish looks delicious!

What are y'all using for physical exfoliation?

I have been on tretinoin for a while, and now that I have increased the % at the recommendation of my derm I am flakey as hell. I am looking for a GENTLE physical exfoliant, preferably something that isn't a face wash type thing since my skin hates everything and breaks out even if the water changes 😒

malcriada_lala,
@malcriada_lala@lemmy.world avatar

I have seen my skin improve after reducing physical exfoliation in most places almost competently. On the rare occasion that I physically exfoliate my face, I just use my hands in the shower to rub dead skin off. It’s surprisingly effective and gentle. I also use fleece cotton rounds to remove makeup and this is also exfoliating. I use retinols, which do a much better and gentler job for my skin issues.

For my elbows, legs, booty, I still scrub with a washcloth in the shower with a hydrating soap, no need to be gentle there. Elsewhere on the body, I gently use a washcloth to soap up, but I am not scrubbing like I did before.

malcriada_lala,
@malcriada_lala@lemmy.world avatar

BTW, tretinoin is a god-send for my skin issues, but YES it makes you crazy flaky! I know it is frustrating, but please remember to be gentle with your skin so it doesn’t get more angry! Good luck!

Retail employers wants you to cover employee's 10 to 20% income via tips and NPR is on board (www.npr.org)

I sympathize with the barista here, but mindset that customers need to cover 10 to 20% of his income is symptom of decades of brainwashing of employees and customers alike. In this case NPR is part of this brainwashing. I will not tip someone for doing their job. I will only tip when I feel it is needed based on the service...

NPR had the audacity to use a picture of a worker protesting for a living wage in this article. They completely miss the point of the protests and overall labor movement if they think it’s a customers responsibility to pay workers right.

Very very worth it. Faster than a stove top kettle and you have more control. I use it every day for coffee and tea and even for cooking

malcriada_lala,

What?

malcriada_lala,
@malcriada_lala@lemmy.world avatar

Your second recommendation won’t work for everyone. For me, when I don’t have the time or energy to cook I am more likely to order unhealthy food or get take out. It helped me a lot to have easy fast healthy options at home. Frozen veggies can be thrown in the oven and then dusted with a really good spice mix. Sandwich with good whole grain bread and lean meats. Once I learned to expect at least 2 “I give up” nights a week, I was able to finally lose a few pounds.

I am American and I love bubbly waters of all kinds. Sodas taste nice for the first few sips but the flavor loses its appeal quickly and I find them all way too sweet. But seltzers? I can drink them all day.

A lot of people in the US don’t trust the water, which is strange because you would think that would make people act when a city actually does lose their local water safety but…

malcriada_lala,

This is the way! Make extra food and freeze it. Some things do better than others but it’s worth exploring this option

I agree. There should be a turn back to the robe-like garments that are used by everyone in certain cultures. It’s comfy and it looks regal as fuck. And with the heat waves we’ve been getting we are gonna have to adapt to our environment where we can

malcriada_lala,
@malcriada_lala@lemmy.world avatar

No. ? They said men should be able to wear clothes that’s more comfortable without the feeling weird about it

I’m a woman and I wish I didnt have to “look cute” every day. Sometimes you just want to wear a shirt, pants, sneakers, and a ball cap. But for some reason that would be weird even tho the guys on my office dress like that every day. We’re just talking about these weird unwritten rules.

malcriada_lala,
@malcriada_lala@lemmy.world avatar

I hope all these strange rules can just be dropped so people can wear whatever type of clothes is comfortable for them. I’m a woman and Ive hated dresses my entire life. I love that jumpsuits have become more popular because to me they are supremely practical and there are plenty that are formal enough to wear to fancy occasions.

malcriada_lala,
@malcriada_lala@lemmy.world avatar

Whatever you find comfy?

I have a small one that I kept as a houseplant over winter and it started to fail because it wasn’t getting enough light. So you may want to put it under a plant light through the dark seasons.

How to de-radicalize my mom's youtube algorithm?

She’s almost 70, spend all day watching q-anon style of videos (but in Spanish) and every day she’s anguished about something new, last week was asking us to start digging a nuclear shelter because Russia was dropped a nuclear bomb over Ukraine. Before that she was begging us to install reinforced doors because the...

malcriada_lala,
@malcriada_lala@lemmy.world avatar

In addition to everything everyone here said I want to add this; don’t underestimate the value in adding new benin topics to her feel. Does she like cooking, gardening, diy, art content? Find a playlist from a creator and let it auto play. The algorithm will pick it up and start to recommend that creator and others like it. You just need to “confuse” the algorithm so it starts to cater to different interests. I wish there was a way to block or mute entire subjects on their. We need to protect our parents from this mess.

prepping for gravel

I am planning on killing my lawn and filling the area with raised beds with gravel in between the beds. I will be using the sheet mulching strategy to kill the grass. I’ve used this strategy successfully to prep for my existing beds. My question is this: should I put a layer of anti weed tarp before installing the gravel, or...

malcriada_lala,
@malcriada_lala@lemmy.world avatar

I’m actually open to ground cover options as long as it will be low maintenance. I fight gravel would be the end all be all. And I like the way it looks

malcriada_lala,
@malcriada_lala@lemmy.world avatar

I just like the way gravel looks but you’re right. Mulch may be the smarter option.
