OK Brightspace, I can identify at least one part of your trash software that can be skipped.

@elb Yeah that's real bad.

@grimmy Nice! That takes more commitment than I have 🙂

What’s the best history of the rise and fall of XMPP? Wikipedia’s article is sadly deficient.

@chrisjrn @luis_in_brief Oh hi! I mostly agree with everything Chris said.

A point of clarification... when we talk about the "fall of XMPP" or "XMPP's failure as a product," are we talking about its small market share compared to WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, etc? Because XMPP still exists and works fine, right?

mark,
@mark@kingant.net avatar

@chrisjrn @luis_in_brief I'll add that the change in market share wasn't specific to XMPP. The same thing happened to AIM, MSN Messenger, and Yahoo Messenger. New options took off and the old options declined. The move from desktop to mobile was a likely catalyst. Maybe the old players didn't have great mobile options in the beginning?

mark,
@mark@kingant.net avatar

@chrisjrn @luis_in_brief Some of it could be attributed to market position: Almost everyone had a Facebook account so using Facebook Messenger was natural. Not everyone had AIM, MSN, and Yahoo accounts (and they didn't all interoperate). WhatsApp is a different story, since they started from nothing. My impression is people were looking for a cheaper alternative to text messages. Maybe WhatsApp also had better features sooner than text messages?

@mark@kingant.net avatar

@tobie @luis_in_brief @chrisjrn The technical aspects that made XMPP hard for mobile? I honestly don't know--I've been away from messaging for a while. XEP-0357 appears to be about pushing notifications to mobile devices, though its status is "deferred."

are a scourge.

I'm sitting here, about 2 hours and 45 minutes on battery on my laptop with a healthy battery, looking at a 36% remaining charge indicator.

When I look to see what's using my CPU and keeping my system out of deep idle, what do I see?

I can't blame web apps for Lennart, but if he was my only problem, I wouldn't be wondering when I need to find an outlet.

@elb You're saying that the browser should be rewritten as a part of systemd?

1/ Today, a power outage before 8 AM that was resolved by some time before 8:21 AM took out substantial services on campus for my entire "work day" (some are still not resolved, as of 4 PM) that required campus services. I taught two lectures today, one with chalk on a chalkboard and one with dry erase on a whiteboard – which is fine, I think we learned a lot, EXCEPT that I had planned to do live coding today! This is the second time in a week that a similar scenario has played out.

@elb I'm sorry, that does sound frustrating and dumb. Do they not have UPSes? And how does it take hours to get a network back up? That sounds super incompetent.

Remember the Tiger 2-XL?

Introduced in the 90s, it was a trivia robot with personality. Pop in a multiple-choice cassette, hit play, and answer a series of fun and educational questions.

Let’s talk about how this works, and how I’m modding this (or trying to!) to digitally play any tape archived to the Internet.
