I'm considering setting up a NAS to backup my stuff and replace Google Photos. Currently I'm looking at Asustor AS6704T and Synology DS923+, with the former having more powerful hardware and hardware encoding, and the latter having a better first party software experience....
The only real alternative is iOS, which extremely restrictive and limiting, UI is unintuitive and clunky to navigate, and a lack of Quality-of-life enhancing apps (like better keyboards or apps to password protect other apps)
There's a bunch of small things that always get in the way. Lack of file system access for example, or FOSS app options.
I told somebody I know who knew about Reddit's API changes about Lemmy. He has a master's degree in Computer Science and works as a software engineer. But then, he told me that it's too confusing to get into, even for someone like him. This is great feedback and I hope that these issues will be fixed in the coming months....
Lemmy is still in active development and there are some missing features, but it is very usable. Your friends' complaints, some are a bit exaggerated and some are really not that big of issues that will get resolved eventually.
Opinion: anyone who takes over a sub reddit because original mods closed it in protest, should face community outrage
