This new piece written with Yolande Strengers is for all the and people who inspired me this past year, esp. @dawnnafus @Aepasek @laurawatts and the most obvious influence, Holly Buck. Thank you for all you are doing to build a world beyond dashboards. https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2214629623004577?dgcid=author

"We radically changed our conception of good food in less than a hundred years. If we’ve done it before, we can do it again." https://www.nebraskapress.unl.edu/university-of-nebraska-press/9781496205056/

melgregg,

How it was done before: world wars prompted innovation in food prep. Corporations hired scientists to make packaged foods seem modern, cheap and convenient.

melgregg,

We need a war-like mentality for regenerative ag. Declare the likely 1.5c overshoot a state of emergency. Make carbon reduction the core political and economic priority. Bring back conscription. Have the armed forces train SWAT teams in a dedicated climate corps.

melgregg,

I keep thinking about all the research I’ve done in rural Australia - how the war memorial so often occupies the center of town, alongside the Returned & Services League (RSL), the Country Women’s Association (CWA), the church, the footy club, maybe Rotary. These local institutions provide such a sense of identity and shared purpose.

melgregg,

Imagine future rural towns with Net Zero plaques, memorials and clubs. Imagine a marching parade honoring the heroic dead - the crusaders who tended farms, planted trees, installed solar and wind turbines, and built local data centers. By my calculation, that generation is us.
