TFW you cancel the Muslim valedictorian, cancel academic tradition, & shambolically pivot to hold hold a militaristic pep rally in a 2/3rds-empty sports stadium instead. No irony is too great when suppressing student protest of a war supported by the United States

Oh good lord. Faculty are now worrying on the listserv about whether admin tracks their donations to the STUDENT NEWSPAPER. What are people smoking.

While I for one am actually in favor of being paranoid under many circumstances, at least reserve this for ANY realistic theory of reality

Machine-generated transcript just put out "valid Victorian" for "valedictorian" and 😂

Does an email exchange with a student about trumped-up, total bullshit disciplinary measures the university administration is throwing at the student get filed in my Department, Advising, or University Governance email folder? 🤔😡

Actually happy with how I'm quoted for once:

“The administrators keep leaning on ‘safety’ without consulting or sharing their thinking with the Senate or wider faculty,” she said. “We do not necessarily doubt that there were safety concerns, but some question whether this series of decisions to call [ on nonviolent protesters] harmed & endangered members of campus community while also sending a message to anyone threatening the campus that those threats work.”

@CedarTea Ok if i'm being brutally honest ... the NYT story is better but the LAT absolutely wiped the floor with them with the picture they selected (and have now already replaced, lol, but I screenshotted it)

What I don't think you'll see in any news story is that my colleagues have been occupying the halls of the administration building for two days now, trying to get disciplinary sanctions of students dropped. They've been met with stonewalling.

It's really awesome that faculty are going to the mat for students & really heartbreaking it's not moving the needle.

Admin censure is so much less than the campus community deserves & also so much less than is visible from inside.

(I’m personally mortified that in the later tense minutes of the Senate meeting, I posted my private dropbox link where over a dozen statements from depts live in a folder called “commencement shitshow” and then people were like, this isn’t opening for me?)

Lol a colleague just said this about a course being taught this semester:

"[Course number] going hard: the prof got arrested, and the TA's are all either suspended, spent time at the encampment, or went to the President's house at midnight to do a scream-in"

People who know anything about USC's past reputation may be surprised to hear of this development 😂

Even with all the collaborative work tools available out there, we don't talk enough about the very sophisticated practice of 2-3 colleagues editing a draft together by texting chunks of the draft back and forth 😬

@danhon We've def hit a new low, but I don't think it's rock bottom yet either

inquiline,
@inquiline@union.place avatar

@danhon Yes that is a good next step further down. Maybe recorded on wax cylinders

inquiline,
@inquiline@union.place avatar

@danhon At my current workplace no; there's a mailroom where student workers hold our mail and then can dispense it to us. But I had one at my last job and the place I recently had a fellowship.

inquiline,

@danhon I love the internal envelope with all the labels and scratched out prior addresses, and also the red thread to hold it closed!! Pry it from my cold dead hands.

Oh lol no one ever sent over the changed text to the colleague who was in charge of emailing it out, so he sent out the unedited version. Perfection!

In an interview I just taped with Rashid Khalidi about #Columbia he said words to the effect of "this is the neoliberal dream of the university--no students, no professors, just administrators and cops on campus"

Aw man RIP Steve Albini 😭

inquiline,

In addition to contributions to a certain rock scene earlier in his life he more recently put in an appearance as a complicated conscience of a generation and I am grateful for both

inquiline,

Strange adulting today: had a moment where I was listening to a radio eulogy for Albini in one ear and academic senate meeting in other. They censured the president and provost but didn’t have the guts to vote no confidence. Albini is still dead

"police raids do not serve a university’s own interests in maintaining peace and civility on campus. The 1960s made that crystal clear. Bringing law enforcement to campus invariably intensifies protests, fuels acrimony, and creates a climate of distrust. Police involvement doesn’t dampen protests; it accelerates them, often with devastating consequences"
