nicerdicer,

"Combat Footage" implies NSFW content.

I think it has someting to do with allowing NSFW content. Many instances do not want to host NSFW content, as it is too much effort to moderate. You should look for an instance where NSFW content is not restricted (I believe lemmy.world allows NSFW content) and try to create the community there.

Does anyone else hope the bulk of Reddit stays there?

I think my favorite thing about Lemmy is that it feels like Reddit used to. Less negativity, more engaged users (I think). I know it will be fun to watch Reddit die, but if I put spite aside what I’m really mad at Reddit about is more about what Reddit became and maybe part of that is when the general internet user started...

nicerdicer,

I think those who are not satisfied with the direction Reddit is going are already here and found a new home. Maybe some will come here after the thrid-party-apps cease to work (if they aren't here already).

The vast majority (the "bulk of Reddit") doesn't bother. As long as they can use Reddit the way they use to they will not leave. It possibly has to do with the fact that these users are not tech-savvy enough in general. I don't mean it in a negative way. They just don't care because they just focus on other things. And with this in mind these users probably checked out Lemmy already but because the buttons are green and their favorite subreddit is not here yet, it is not appealing to them. So they rather stay on reddit.

nicerdicer,

I don't think that the concept of Karma should be implemented in the Fediverse. At least not, like we know it from Reddit.

Reddit's Karma was handled like a currency, and in order to obtain such, the overall-quality of the content declined as a result of Karma-farming.

In my opinion, the fediverse feels so new, fresh and exciting, because there is no such thing as Karma. No barrier that hinders one to post someting, because a certian count of Karma - or Lemmy-Schmeckle, call it as you want - would be needed to post something. Yet.

nicerdicer,

I noticed two things, along with all the good answers in this thread:

  1. There is no such thing as Karma, and I hope it will never be implemented into the fediverse. The reason is that on Reddit Karma was handled like a currency, an in order to obtain Karma, the general quality of the content declined, as a result of Karma-farming. Also it was used as a threshold for posting comments in certain communities. Imagine you could join an instance only when you have a certain ammount of a Karma equivalent. That is something I don't want to see.
  2. At this moment there are mostly tech savvy users (former heavy Reddit users) here, who are interested in creating content and participation. Also these folks are helping each other. It feels like a little community. I think, the threshold to join the fediverse is still too high for the average mainstream user. Maybe it will be easier to get started when there are mobile apps.

nicerdicer,

Or dedicate the subreddit to a resource for pirat-related stuff i.e. pirate ships, cannons and all that 15th century pirate culture. Like taking the name litarally.

Does anyone without kids ever wish they could attend "family oriented" things such as zoos, museums etc on days where kids are not allowed?

I know it sounds selfish, and I don't dislike people having kids or parents in general, but often on the weekend if I ever want to do these activities, I often feel like im fighting for space with children or families to view exhibits. I wish there were days, maybe once a month, where you could attend and no children under 14 were allowed or something. Maybe if its an income thing where the zoo/etc is free, there is an admission price that day.

Thoughts?

nicerdicer,

I'd love that! But I doubt that certain places will follow through with that, as it means a loss in profit for that particular time. Also, society in general is rather children-focused. Dare to say anything against children!

A couple of month ago there was a restaurant near where I live that decided on banning children of a certain age during the evening hours, because the children were running around unsupervised and became a tripping hazard for the waiters, also they annoyed other guests.

As the restaurant announced their decision to the public, it was an outrage. Most of the people opposed to that decision were - of course - parents with children, claiming to be excluded from being a customer to the restaurant, not realising, that their lack of parenting and supervision led to that decision. Of course, those parents went along with the "this place hates children" and "it's how children are" narrative. I don't know how it turned out in the end, because I didn't follow up. But yes, I'd be in favour for certain days at places, where kids are not allowed to be at a particular time.

nicerdicer,

How has ur lemmy experience been so far?

Im joining in on the reddit ditching thing, and was kinda worried at first that i wouldnt be able to like use it the way i did reddit as it feels like a whole new place, but after engaging with posts and people and actually being a part of lemmy rather than being lurk mode all the time i was pleasantly surprised with how easy it...

nicerdicer,

Today is my 5th day in the fediverse and I like it! In the beginning there were some troubles regarding the registration, but it all worked out (I was not able to create an account with Firefox. After I switched to Opera, it worked). Also there are some issues with the auto-update of the feed. It suddenly starts scrolling and doesn't stop until I hit the refresh button in the browser. As far as I understand, this bug will be fixed soon.

While being here for the last couple of days, I realised, how cluttered Reddit has become. Take r/askreddit for instance: There are so many very similar-to-another questions over there, I now wonder, if they have been created by bots. This applies to other subreddits as well.

Browsing here and interacting with other users feels refreshing! It is like the early Reddit, when it was more community-focused instead of what it has become now, riddled with ads, bots and NFTs. I also like that there is no such thing as karma here.

I certainly will visit reddit in the future, but I'm going stay with the fediverse. There is so much to discover!

nicerdicer,

These stupid trucks are literally killiing us (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jN7mSXMruEo)
