@niko@mk.absturztau.be

Hello ! My name is Niko, 18, Bi and I like computers, cooking, drawing, and biking. I'm studying Digital Systems in Greece currently but will move to Germany once im done (or even this year idk).

I'm really into programming stuff like algorithms, games and stuff like my 3D Engine, CPU sim and my programming language. Basically big nerd for anything puter-related. I use Arch & Artix btw.

Feel free to hit me up on my listed contacts!

Damn, Saarland's English CS Bachelor is very competitive so I dunno if I'll get in but If I do get accepted, I'll definitely be going this winter semester. The program looks like it was made for me

Are there any languages that have the C style function declaration but allow you to return multiple things ? I'm just curious to know because I'm looking for nice syntax ideas for how to represent tuples as a type

@jay Thanks! This is probably what I was gonna do myself I just need to change the way commas are used in expressions

I like how I was never a big fan of interpreted languages but now I'm making one. Well to be honest, languages like Java and Lua have a clear purpose for why they're interpreted and python is just... python which is why I dont like it personally

@puniko I swear the "Wow look, I can make programs on my computer that do stuff :D" to "Damn I really wanna cuddle with a guy right now" pipeline is real

@niko Idk Ive just noticed recently while working on my language I'm constantly like "guys,,,, :gaythoughts::neocat_pleading:". Please I need one

Damn I just realized how long Ive spent on my language. Yeah I guess making a new language is slow

line plotting algogithms are cool..

niko,
@niko@mk.absturztau.be avatar

@kopopp which ones do you mean

niko,
@niko@mk.absturztau.be avatar

@kopopp oh yeah line drawing algos are pretty cool, also triangle ones. idk how wu's works but typically they just take into account the error of quantizing to a single pixel and distribute it. It can be done in many ways, some more efficient than others and some make it as realistic as possible by calculating based on thickness of the line, how much of its volume is filling a specific pixel

niko,
@niko@mk.absturztau.be avatar

@kopopp Graphics is a big rabbithole especially when talking about the perfectly accurate line algorithm. You also need to take into account that your monitor is sRGB (nonlinear) and your aliasing is technically wrong because of that but the error is not so big and these things are designed to be efficient rather than hyper realistic.

What's the last game you've completed? And what did you think of it?

edit: "completed" means "beaten", so simply finishing a playthrough, no matter the % of completion

niko,
@niko@mk.absturztau.be avatar

@solidsanek TowerClimb, really hard but really fun and I like how much it enforces the fact that you're just a tiny little man dealing with obstacles bigger than you since it makes your accomplishments and skill much more impactful and fun. Even with the best ingame items, you are still going to die and lose a lot of runs

niko,
@niko@mk.absturztau.be avatar

@steffo @solidsanek I've done the Centurial Trials too which killed me. Thing takes like 8 hours of continuous gameplay and you can only carry a single revive :blobcatdead: anyways I beat it now so I'm not doing it again but I've been bashing my head against Colossus for a while

niko,
@niko@mk.absturztau.be avatar

@steffo It's okay, you can do it

niko,
@niko@mk.absturztau.be avatar

@steffo @solidsanek I really do love TC though, if I did more gamedev I'd make a game inspired by some of its ideas. Specifically I like how everything is focused on function rather than numbers. You get touched once and you die and it feels more natural in my opinion and also all items are skill dependent like you need to actually be able to wield something for it to be useful. Every time ive gotten a really good item for the first time I basically died soon after because I couldn't bring out its full potential. There's also no concept of items just being better without added cost. Like brobash's scimitar is super fast and you could probably insta kill everything with it but that means you need to deal with how clunky it is to use and deal with its short range which I cant but in the hands of a pro, it basically is night and day. Almost all items come with this catch 22 where they make you much more powerful if you can use them. The king's hook is great and basically solves all navigation issues but Ive died a lot trying to use it because it's not easy. I wish more games just didn't have the thoughtless approach of "bigger number" and instead had unique items with unique funtions

niko,
@niko@mk.absturztau.be avatar

@steffo @solidsanek I didnt actually check out Spelunky but probably will

niko,
@niko@mk.absturztau.be avatar

@steffo @solidsanek also crates weirdly also fit into the catch 22 function I talk about because you can zip with them
