nulatium,

Sorry, but the server made no statement specifying who made any choice, only pointed to the fact that as a service it is Discord requesting your number to verify your account at the server owner’s request.

Therefore they aren’t lying to you and are only outlining that if you were worried about the server having your number, that they won’t in fact have it, only Discord will. The assumption is that you trust Discord with your phone number. The additional tracking this implies is exactly used, at least for that server it would seem, as a means to ensure your account is valid and not a duplicate or some other bother.

nulatium,

I believe that’s where your misunderstanding lies. The admin does control what setting is enabled, however while they’re aware that it will require a phone number, it is still the most secure setting offered by Discord.

Your preference of it not being required and insistence that it be modified does apply to the admin of the server, but those admins have not omitted any information, only that they choose to set their security as they do and that the information you provide is being handled by Discord and not themselves.

I do believe every person who’s commented understands the point of your frustration but I believe your point against the admins that they are lying is inaccurate. They’ve not left out any information. They’ve only stated that the information provided is requested by Discord, as it is used in their highest setting, they have not said anything about their reasonings or intentions in regards to the settings they have chosen.

I believe what they’re implying is something along the lines of, “While we understand you disagree with the requirement of a phone number, please note that the information you provide will be handled by Discord for verification purposes, and that our server will have nothing to do with that data at all. We are merely trusting Discord as a service more than your individual account and are using our best possible methods to defeat bots and spam. It is unfortunate that it requires a phone number but it has been deemed necessary.”

It feels as though most of your replies are tinted with anger and frustration both for the subject and the persons relying to you for not understanding your point. However, again, I think your anger might be misguided. The admins show no intent to change the setting and that is their choice to make but they have never lied to you or implied that they didn’t choose to use that setting. They have only stated that for the most secure setting, it is Discord requiring your phone number, if the most secure setting required your phone or your cars VIN or the birth certificate of your first born child appears to be irrelevant in their decision to use the highest setting. Therefore, sure, they choose the setting requiring a phone but that isn’t the intent of their decision. It’s to keep bots and spam away.

nulatium,

For what it’s worth, I don’t think they were attempting to paint anybody in a bad light, they were simply disagreeing.

It generally seems that OP has misunderstood the intent of the admin reply, and that OP is the one painting the admins in a bad light, as they disagree with the decision for their security settings.

To declare that the admins are directly asking for a phone number after their reply insinuates that the admins of that server care about receiving phone numbers (which they won’t). The admins simply use the most secure setting available to them and it wouldn’t matter how the verification works provided the admins see it as within reason.

OP obviously disagrees with this requirement and that’s fine. However to call the admins liars is uncalled for as they’re simply making a choice in their server for its security and it happens to require a phone number. The admins are not strictly deciding that a phone number is the best verification method, but it is the best verification method available to them through Discord, and as the best method they are using it.

nulatium,

I would say instead that they just chose the highest security setting, which happened to require your phone number, a security setting defined by Discord, and optionally chosen by admins as the most secure option.

However, if you wish to disagree that’s fine, but you could absolutely say that the server admins have successfully handled their server security by using the highest security setting available. Just because you do not agree with using your phone number with your Discord account does not mean that they should or will make the change and it does not make them liars to describe that Discord is the official party middle man requesting your phone number at their behest to verify you.

It unfortunately seems that such a community may not be for you.

nulatium,

As stated before, they choose the highest security possible, and Discord as a service defines that as tying a phone to the account.

You can be upset all you want, but it is by definition, Discord requesting your phone number as a neutral party in the interests of both you and the server in order to be what Discord has defined as the most secure method of positive identification.

You don’t have to like it, and there’s nothing saying that the admins like forcing phone numbers to accounts to be present in their server, they’ve only deemed it necessary to ward off problematic accounts. The community they run is theirs and that decision lies in their hands.

There’s a talk at DEFCON on YouTube about hacking them. Great way to see how it works.

nulatium,

By spinning yes, they operate mostly passively and therefore last a long time, including by having terrible security to save battery life.

nulatium,

There’s been a solution of, provided two usable graphics processors, running Linux and virtualizing Windows underneath it with the gaming GPU for only a 5-8% loss.
