Depending on your use of Matrix you will run into memory and disk spaces issue pretty soon. Basically if you plan to participate in large public Matrix rooms it will not work on a cheap VPS because of that. However if you mainly use it for private messaging between friends etc. it will likely work.

That said, personally I think XMPP is better for that use-case as the mobile apps are easier to use and use less battery. The easiest way to set up a personal XMPP server for friends and family is snikket.org

XMPP servers are super resource efficient, so even the cheapest VPS will not have any problems with it.

Normally I would say software, or rather a raid-like filesystem like btrfs or ZFS. But in your specific case of funneleing it all through a single usb-c connection it is probably better to keep using an external box that handles it all internally.

That said, the CPU load of software raid it very small, so that isn’t really something to be concerned with, but usb connections are quite unstable and not good for directly connecting drives in a raid.

I supposed that is because the JBOD box was handling the raid internally so short connection issues are not that problematic and can be recovered from automatically. But that wouldn’t be the case if you connected everything together with a usb hub and usb to sata adapters and run a software raid on that.

Only if you treat debt as something absolute that has to be repaid no matter what.

In reality in many cases debt is written off as impossible to claw back and sold off to unscrupulous debt enforcement companies at a fraction of the nominal value. Who in turn also rarely manage to get the money.

We as society could simply decide to forget certain types of debt and basically that is what states do via inflation and which historically many societies have done via debt jubilees.

The book “Debt the first 5000 years” gives good overview on this matter and fiat currencies in general.

These are large existing code-bases that where developed without federation in mind. Gitlab also started working on AP federation, but like with Forgejo it looks like a multi-year project that it involves a lot of refactoring of the code.
