Chrome Beta 120 is out. I've just published the beta post and there's so much on the way including unprefixed and updated CSS masking and a change to the CSS Nesting specification. Take a look https://developer.chrome.com/blog/chrome-120-beta/

I'm on a local group for people who have lost or found pets. As an early morning runner, and friend to cats, I keep an eye out for local missing ones.

However, what amazes me is the number of tortoises that are lost, or found just ambling down a road somewhere, and reunited with the tortoise-losers. Who knew that so many Brits owned tortoises? I've never met anyone with a tortoise, but apparently I'm surrounded by them, and the things are like Houdini.

As much as having a kid is really tough at points, at least the kid, unlike the bloody cats, does not wee in my suitcase all over a silk blouse 😖

@sally I have a suitcase-pisser (a cat, not a child, he has pissed in the case belonging to my daughter however). I have to warn guests.

If I'm not on my computer making a nuisance of myself at work, I'm in my house making a nuisance of myself to felines. The cats currently think I should go back in my office.

@andy he's huge. He's well over twice Em's weight. She is still in charge.

I keep hearing how ML and GenAI is going to allow us to do "more with less" and streamline all our processes. What I know from reality is that most people resist even the most basic forms of automation. I'm thinking about the sort of productivity wins you get from spending a day learning a bit more than the basics of your spreadsheet software, or figuring out how to write some very simple scripts.

Are all the people copying and pasting stuff about suddenly going to have an epiphany?

My parents are staying for a few days, so my dad is helping me with a new DIY project. Slide out understairs drawers. So far we've cut out the opening, bought a lot of plywood, and sawed up a bunch of pieces.

I have drawers! They need finishing to match the rest of the stairs but they are fully functional.

Just got an email from British Airways. They know how much time I spend trapped in their aircraft, and that I'm probably not excitedly awaiting the onboard dining on my flight in ten days time, yet they felt the need to email me about it.

I'd prefer an email telling me they aren't going to delay my flight for reasons that sound very much like "the dog ate my flight plan".

Back in the UK after a lot of travel. It seems to be autumn now, and dark in the mornings.

@andy aye. Just add a bit of icy sideways rain and I'm in my element.

    @fox Absolutely. It's one of the reasons I'm glad not to be running a small product business these days. Folks, who often knew we were a business of two people, were just awful. Talking to us as if we were a faceless corp with a giant staff. I actually get less hassle from other webdevs now I'm at Google, actually at a giant corp, than I did when I ran a tiny product business for developers.

    After a conversation today, I was left asking the question, Why are we not still using tables-for-layout? https://rachelandrew.co.uk/archives/2023/09/07/why-are-we-not-still-using-tables-for-layout/

    @mia @gsnedders I used it heavily as a fallback for Flexbox in one version of the Perch UI. It got you a lot of the way there for small UI elements.

    Such sad news. Molly was a trailblazer for web standards, an amazing writer and educator. She cared about the web so deeply, and forged a path that folk like me followed.

    @jaffathecake Oh look at that face. I can also recommend the soft cones, or the little recovery suits depending on where the injury is, though some cats act like they have forgotten how to walk when you put them in clothes.

    It's a Bank Holiday weekend. As a Brit I'm obligated to do some poorly thought through DIY. So I've just ripped up a vile entrance hall rug, and have decided to lay tiles. I have no idea how tiling works. I'll report back.

    Tiles that I optimistically believe I can install.

    rachelandrew,
    @rachelandrew@front-end.social avatar

    There are tiles adhered to my floor. I've not done the ones I have to cut yet (that's a tomorrow problem). I've also discovered that my hall is not actually straight so I've laid them straight to the wall that is, and I'll deal with the wonky other side when I put in the cut pieces.

    I've no clue what I'm doing but it means they look straight if you look down the hall.

    rachelandrew,
    @rachelandrew@front-end.social avatar

    I'm sure you are all excited for my next DIY update. Have cut tiles, still have all my fingers, though I'm quite damp and covered in tile crap. Neighbours are thrilled by my sawing at tiles in the street.

    Tile cutting machine, covered in tile gunk.

    Grout is in, and that's a wrap for this weekend. I need to seal round the back and put threshold bars on, but the sealant takes too long to dry to do now (the cats will get into it). I'll do that when I paint the skirting.

    It's not perfect but I learned a lot! I'd be happy to do other tiling now.

    rachelandrew,
    @rachelandrew@front-end.social avatar

    @ramsey actually not that much, I'm far more sweary and annoyed with myself if I think I'm competent at a thing. When I know I'm completely clueless I'm a lot easier on myself.
