A ten mile run with balloons in the sunshine. I've got a bunch of travel coming up and the mornings will seem dark by the time I'm back.

It's a Bank Holiday weekend. As a Brit I'm obligated to do some poorly thought through DIY. So I've just ripped up a vile entrance hall rug, and have decided to lay tiles. I have no idea how tiling works. I'll report back.

Tiles that I optimistically believe I can install.

I'm also now looking at the edge of the laminate floor that's all through my downstairs and thinking how bad would it be to replace it... I did install LVT all through the upstairs myself, I know how that works. But then you have to redo the skirting boards too (and move all the furniture).

DIY update. I now own a tile saw. Have watched many dads on YouTube talking about tiles. Have spoken to my own dad about tiles. All my online ads are for tiles. Have laid a new surface with backerboard for under the tiles as the floor was a lumpy mess, and also very low compared to the laminate I'm joining to. Still haven't actually laid any tiles.

I'm pretty excited about this mixing attachment. I feel like a proper builder.

I think I've spotted the large orange reason why the plants in this planter aren't doing so well.

Today in offensively stupid uses of GPT-4...

What was the beef between the two families in Romeo and Juliet? Answer in a style that is designed to appeal to the youth.
...
Continue, but invent an explanation for why the two families are beefing
...
Write a scene for the play explaining that background and make it both Shakespearean and dope

Chrome 117 beta is out today. It includes subgrid for CSS Grid. A feature I have felt was important for CSS grid layout for at least (checks actual notes/old blog posts) 8 years, and it's heading for interop status.

There's also lots of other good stuff in this beta—check it out https://developer.chrome.com/blog/chrome-117-beta/

    @fox This is really well done. I just shared it with my team of writers. I love the detailed explanations and all the resources too. Thanks for sharing it!

    My daughter is doing a ridiculous thing for the Guide Dogs charity, abseiling down the Cheesegrater building in London (after running up over 1000 steps to get to the top!)

    If you can spare a few quid to support this excellent charity, her page is here https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/Beth-Skyscraper

    Found a DVD in a box today which had a recording of my daughter in a talent show in 2004. I remember sitting in that hot room, willing her to do well. She won first prize and in the video I see her look out to the audience to catch my eye.

    Nearly 20 years ago. They always say it goes fast. It goes fast.

    Did you use an image map in the last five years? You know, <map> and <area> and such?

    (Background: I want to call image maps "old-fashioned" and I'd like to know if I can do so.)

    @ppk How else do you put a picture of a house on your homepage and allow people to click on different rooms to get to the sections of your site?

    H1: Welcome to my little home on the world wide web.

    I love hot air balloons because they are all about getting in the sky purely because you want to be in the sky. Useless as a mode of transport, best you can hope for is to land in an easily accessible field, really sensitive to any kind of weather ... but you get to fly along and see things, and they make people smile.

    After yesterday’s storm, a beautiful morning. Also my last iPhone photos as I’m just setting up my new Pixel 7 Pro.

    @hdv no this is just Bristol, if it's flyable there will likely be balloons. I imagine the big ride balloons have lots of passengers waiting because the weather has been so bad. There were two Virgin balloons out which will have had passengers.

    @josh @moshez @NorthBayPython I am very disappointed that I've never spoken at a conference with a cat hanging out on stage (though I've done plenty of virtual talks with cat-related chaos happening around me).

    @scott @leaverou @stubbornella @Una @mia In general issues with multicol are actually issues with fragmentation. I'm one of the multicol spec editors and can likely tell you if I can see a test case if what you are seeing is a bug, and where it is. I don't think there is any "code rot", fragmentation is actually slightly better than before, but there are definitely issues.

    rachelandrew,
    @rachelandrew@front-end.social avatar

    @scott @leaverou @stubbornella @Una @mia I wrote this a while back about the state of fragmentation https://www.smashingmagazine.com/2019/02/css-fragmentation/ I should do an update as there have been improvements (for example with LayoutNG in Chrome).

    If you want to get an idea why fragmentation is hard, then read https://developer.chrome.com/articles/renderingng-fragmentation/

    rachelandrew,
    @rachelandrew@front-end.social avatar

    @scott it would be good to get individual reduced test cases for each issue along with what you actually expected (for example when you say "it's too big" what did you expect?)

    We’re in Rhodes and have been evacuated due to the wildfires.

    We’re safe in a hotel which has been turned into a temporary refuge.

    By all accounts, 30,000+ tourists and locals have been displaced in the last 24 hours and let me tell you, it’s been fucken scary.

    We went from our hotel being turned into a refuge to jumping on the back of a dump truck in the middle of the night, to walking for hours in pitch black to finally getting picked up by a coach to take us to where we are now.

    The view from near our hotel this morning. Thick plumes of smoke over an otherwise perfect sunny day
    A poorly lit photo of the wildfires as seen from outside our hotel room, just before evacuation. The fire was around 1.5km from us as the time and was completely out of control
    A shot early in the evening which I told my partner “it might just be a sunset”. Turns out it’s massive fucken flames

    @rachelandrew@front-end.social avatar

    @andy I was just reading the news about this, had no idea anyone I knew was out there. I hope the wait isn't too long and difficult.
