    @RobW As far as I understood it, it was Lars‘ attempt to copy Nu Metal styles, to “sound fresh”. The tinny drum sound was intentional. He failed miserably. And James was in rehab most of the time, so he wasn’t there really (both physically as well as creatively). It is not a good album, and given how little they play from it nowadays they seem to think so too. But the whole thing rescued them as a band and made them stronger, so I’m personally not as salty about it as many other Metallica fans seem to be.

    We’ve picked a time for our Swedish lapland holiday that sees temperatures that even the locals consider “cold“. -35°C right now. The electric radiators, the heat pump AND the fireplace running at the same time are unable to heat our cabin up sufficiently. I had to wear my full set of clothing, including a wool hat, to sleep under two blankets because it is so fucking cold 🥶

    Threads, day 8. I‘m seeing masses of posts of people showing screenshots of bank account statements and cropped German ID cards. I don’t get it.

    Anyway the amount of stupidity on Threads is astonishing.

    I recently started playing Cyberpunk.
    What’s the point of being able to give yourself a massive willy if it won’t let you run around without your pants on?
    Just think how funny it would be having a futuristic shoot out with that thing flapping around.

    @RobW Hm, can’t you just disable clothing by middle clicking on it? Can’t check now. That would make the character naked, although you can’t see it.

    @RobW Might be s different between the Xbox version and the PC version. I‘m pretty sure you can remove all clothing. There is at least one mission where your character is abducted after a BD and you wake up naked in a room with an empty inventory. I‘ll check later.

    I checked out Threads. It’s weirding me out. The algorithmic timeline just shoves tons of posts into my face, from people I don’t know (and, most of the time, don’t want to know) without me being able to control this. And there’s seemingly no end to this. I’m a content completionist, I like to read until I’ve reached the top of my timeline, and then I stop. Not possible on Threads.

    Honestly I’m not a big Facebook fan (no shit), but blocking Threads purely out of spite is silly and immature. It’s the grown up version of a “no girls allowed” sign on a tree house. Grow up, people.

    @dave Shrug. The thing is: whether we like it or not, this thing will be a success with the general public. So we can either stay in our little nerdy bubble here (no offense, but it does often have a Linux basement dweller smell in here) or keep it open. I personally opt for the open approach. What’s the worst that can happen?

    Kind of amusing to watch Americans in panic as they realize that their immutable genetic makeup is now out in the world, just because they wanted to know if they’re 5% German or some other ancestry bullshit.

    Honestly this common belief among Americans that they‘re $nationality because some ancestors came from $nation or $vagueAreaOfNation is so incredibly stupid. “My ancestors were German, therefore I’m German, which explains why I’m punctual and like Birkenstock” or “My grandmother was from Italy, so I’m Italian and I make the best pizza!”. If you only knew how hard European’s eyes roll when we hear this bullshit. Unless you have an actual passport of another nation, you are a US citizen, and that’s all you are.

    I'm currently working through my podcast feed (haven't had much time to listen lately, which is why I'm a few episodes behind). Anyway, I just listened to episode 389 of the Talk Show. He was talking to Gabe Rivera from Techmeme. Pretty boring episode really, but I did find interesting how extremely positively Gruber was talking about Facebook. He sounded like a born again fan boy. It’s really irritating. I noticed how he pretty much abandoned Mastodon for Threads, but given how he talked about the company in that episode makes me wonder if there’s more behind it.

    Any other Castro for iOS users out here? It’s been misbehaving all day. The service — tentacles — is returning a 502 error (bad gateway.)

    I know it was sold to tiny by Supertop, then I think tiny sold it off and it’s kind of languished.

    It’s still a great app but I’m beginning to wonder if whoever has it now has given up on it?

    @johnbrayton @fahrni @marcpalmer Kind of a red flag that they’re a) still only on Twitter and b) verified. I stopped using Castro about a year ago after the app went without an update for several months and slowly fell apart, but if I were still using it, this would be a good enough reason to switch.
