Sometimes I wish I had the average person’s ignorance towards IT issues. Every time I tell my wife or friends who are not in It about some new problem, like AI training on user data, or companies doing cross-service tracking for detailed user profiling, they just shrug and keep scrolling through Instagram. Ignorance is bliss.

@nicklockwood I use Kagi and tried to get my wife to use it too. Switched to a family plan, installed the search extension on her phone and let it use Kagi by default. After two month or so I found out she used the “!g” query every time to redirect the Kagi query to Google, because “they have reviews for stores”. I don’t even.

@phranck Ich finde solche Statistiken immer wieder erschreckend.

Hobby YouTube in a Nutshell: „Heute bauen wir $holzprojekt.

“Quiet quitting” has been creeping back into my timeline in the past few days. I stand by it: it’s the biggest toxic bullshit since the invention of the fruit basket as a “job perk”.

While I was at the car mechanic today, waiting for my regular vehicle inspection, I overheard a fascinating discussion between two gentlemen who worked there. The first one was doing something on his iPhone and apparently immediately force quit whatever app he was using. The other one then told him that he saw on TikTok that force quitting apps was actually bad (no shit!) and that Apple recommends against it. The other one then told him nonchalantly that of course Apple would recommend it, since they want to “keep listing to you”.

Dude they make the device and the operating system. If Apple wants to listen to you, quitting apps won’t stop them.

About half a year in I gotta say the iPhone 15 Pro Max is the nicest iPhone ever, at least comfort-wise. And it seems to be the most durable too. I use it without a case or screen protector and it still looks brand new–no scratches, neither on the screen, or the titanium sides or the back. I don’t tend to drop my phones though, so that’s a factor. And it just feels very secure in my hands, even though it’s the biggest iPhone. So A++ would buy again.

I got some “feedback” about my latest Android endeavors via private message that I want to comment publicly on (without disclosing the source).

One was “since when are you such a Google fanboy, I followed you for iOS content” to which I can only say I’m sorry I didn’t match you content expectations, feel free to click the next unfollow button near to you.

Another one was “Kinda doubt you really used an Android phone OR you are maybe a paid shill because last time I used one (which was not not long ago) it was full of bugs and literally unusable compared to iPhone”. Look I’m not trying to doubt your experience or something, computer software always has bugs. But I didn’t really experience anything critical during my time trying it out.

On the other hand, just this morning, I had to press the sleep/wake button on my iPhone because tapping the screen didn’t wake it as it normally would. It does that sometimes. Or yesterday when my iPhone was still in sleep focus, the lock screen was literally black. Nothing there. I could swipe it up as always, but it was one huge black block. Trust me, iPhones have bugs too.

As for the paid shill thing…really?

I've been using an Android phone as an exploratory "how's the weather over there" test kinda sorta full time for a few days now. I'm going to write a more comprehensive report later, but let me just say this: Apple should be incredibly nervous and much, much nicer to third party iOS developers because from my (granted, limited) experience the only thing that truly sets iOS apart from Android these days is third party apps. They are simply nicer in every way on iOS, and so far I haven't seen a single native (cross platform apps are by definition equally shitty on both platforms) app on Android that was on par or better than an iOS equivalent. But apart from third party apps, I could just pick up an Android phone tomorrow and barely miss a thing. In fact there are some things on Android that I would love to see in iOS as well. So Apple should be on their hands and knees and humbly thank third party developers for their hard work. Instead they alienate devs and act as if people buy iPhones because of Apple. Morale among iOS developers is deteriorating at an ever faster pace. Apple and the iOS platform can't afford this, but I'm afraid its leadership is so far up their own buttholes that they won't realize this until it's too late.

rene,
@rene@social.fouquet.me avatar

@julianwki The apps that I know are cross-platform (e.g. Amazon, the Sonos app) are really bad on both platforms. I haven't used something like Flutter myself really. I have always been firmly in the "native" camp.
