Bitcoin and their ilk really aren't my thing, but many talk about the need for a digital currency. But here's the thing - we already have one, don't we?

@kev eh.

When people talk about the need for digital currency, they specifically mean digital currency that has certain important features of physical currency that bank transfers and credit card payments most certainly do not have.

Specifically:

  • anonymity of transactions;
  • no single point of control.

I personally add to that:

  • friction to use, rising with the amount being transacted.

Bank transfers and credit cards are not "digital currency" in the sense in which people propose it.
