Hello there!

I’m also @savvywolf , and I have a website at www.savagewolf.org .

Instead of "casual" or "ranked" they should just have "play to win" or "play for fun."

Because it doesn’t seem to matter currently if you play ranked games or casual games, the general experience tends to be the same. But one has numbers and things to go with it. You still get people playing to win in casual games and you get people dicking around having fun in ranked games, and the ranks don’t necessarily...

Smash Bros uses/used “For Fun” and “For Glory”, which I thought was pretty cute.

I think there is an issue with saying that ranked is “playing to win” though, since people in non-ranked games are still trying to win. They probably don’t want the pressure of ranked, or maybe just don’t want to play the meta.

Remember you can cross post!

If you’re looking at a post, it’s the small icon with two squares. If you click it, you can send it over to another community on any instance. Not only does that community get the content (which is good for everyone), but there’s also a “cross posted to blah” link on both ends that lists the other community. Also, if people are subscribed to both communities and using the web interface (rather than Jerboa), they only see one copy of the post even though it’s on two communities.

Of course, don’t spam, but to me it seems like a reasonable way to “get the word out” about overlapping communities.

Would generally recommend following hastags, Mastodon is small enough that it is a good way to find content.

In terms of instances, there’s also pawb.fun and furry.engineer , if you don’t mind me shilling for Crashdoom. :P

Apart from that, are there any topics that you (or anyone else reading this thread) are interested in?

Congrats on having the courage to do it, glad it went well.

I wouldn’t think it weird if you called yourself furry just for that, IMO all it means is that you like media starring people with animal traits. There’s no requirement to actually want to be or even dress up as said animal people. Some people consider catgirls/kitsune a distinct thing and it’s only “real furry” if the character is covered in fur, but I don’t really agree with that.

I also wouldn’t have issue to someone using the label “fox girl” to mean just fox ears and tail. However, if you were talking in a furry community, my initial “mental image” would probably be something like …tumblr.com/…/54a5a8f2d31244bfed221d294f6ae8b515b… . But that may just be me, there really is no standard for this kind of thing.

Honestly, as far as I’m concerned you’re a furry if you want to be. I’ve seen many comment threads where people and even artists go to great lengths to try to convince themselves and others that they aren’t “really” a furry, sometimes with an undertone of “I don’t want to be one of those people”. At this point I’ve given up on defining it; you’re a furry if you want to be, and not a furry if you don’t want to be.

KoboldCoterie put it best, we aren’t fans of gatekeeping, and honestly the more friendly people we have in the community, the better. If you want to identify as furry, go for it. If you don’t, but still want to consume furry media, then feel free to do that instead.

I can’t believe we’re in a Zelda situation where the timeline has been split into a good future and bad future.

Did Pikmin 2 and 3 not happen in this timeline? Is the only reason Pikmin 3 happened a direct result of the treasures found in 2?

How deep does this conspiracy go?

Hey, just wanted to let you know that someone created !ttgrpgfurs a few days ago, might be worth crossposting there to hopefully get a bit of activity going.

Anyway, I do love a good post apocalyptic “unstoppable force” kind of narrative, so you have my interest!

Once I unlock trains I pretty much tear down my base and switch it over to city blocks dedicated to individual components, each using 1-1 or 1-2 trains for inputs.

I think it’s just marketing, tbh. Bluesky is exclusive and thus getting into it means You Are Important. Threads is basically one click away for people who already use Instagram, which I guess is their target market. Such is the power of these megacorps, they can just throw advertising at the problem and it mostly works.

I want to hope that eventually people will leave those platforms once the excitement wears off and they realize that they are problematic (training AI with user posts, poor moderation, privacy, etc.). Or maybe some big controversy will happen which causes a Twitter like situation for them. But realistically, I don’t see either happening short term.

But honestly, Mastodon has the IRC problem where it seems to be aimed at “techies” and require significant buy-in to its ideology. I made an account with Otaku to follow someone last night, and all it needed was an email and password. Whereas for Mastodon you need to pick an instance, write an application (how much do you need to write? Is it an exam? Will you get rejected?) and wait. The Mastodon team have done an amazing work on making all of this as smooth as possible, but ultimately it’s a hurdle that you need to invest time and energy to understanding. And then your friend just sends you a BlueSky invite and you decide to just go there.

I’m not sure I agree with other comments saying that it’s because it’s too hard or that people think it’s too hard… It’s more that it’s an additional hurdle and complexity that people won’t go through unless they agree with the fediverse ideology.

And then there’s the elephant in the room, which is probably just my personal experience. My first Lemmy account was on an instance that defederated with a bunch of others, and my “main” Mastadon account is/was with an instance that was silenced by meow.social for an unknown reason. Not a good experience for me. Not to mention the immature “I’ll defed you if you don’t block Meta!” thing going on right now…

Fear of “Picking the right instance” is legit something I would have left the fediverse for if I wasn’t so angry at megacorps all the time. I don’t want politics in my social media as a matter of policy, and “fediverse politics” is something that I feel I always need to be aware of. And it results in me making long venty posts like this, because I have Opinions…

Although, I have a question… How many fediverse accounts do people here have? Is having multiple mastodon/lemmy accounts something that’s normal, but not really talked about?

EDIT: Wow, I did not realize how much I posted until I sent it. See why I try to avoid drama and politics? :P

This is something I’ve been thinking about, imagine you have no experience with Mastodon, and you go to an instance that looks good. You go to sign up and you are hit with a form saying “Please leave a message with your application”.

Of course, we know that it’s just for rooting out bots and obvious trolls, but without that experience, it looks like you are being judged as to whether you are a good “fit” for the community. Most people’s experiences with “applications” are for jobs, university, that sort of thing, where you need to convince someone that you are good enough to join them.

savvywolf,
@savvywolf@pawb.social avatar

To be clear, I’m not really complaining about it. I actually think this is something that should be normalized and is good for social media platforms (as opposed to verifying you based on phone number or photograph or nonsense).

I’m just saying that Mastodon and Lemmy are the only platforms where this kind of thing is relatively widespread, and it does act as a hurdle for those who have never seen this kind of thing before.

savvywolf,
@savvywolf@pawb.social avatar

What I do is to search a handle on the other instance (e.g. search for @crazy_pony in meow.social’s search box). I think if it shows up there (and is decently up to date), it means the instance hasn’t entirely defederated. I can’t say that this is 100% accurate though, or if it covers other things that can happen.

savvywolf,
@savvywolf@pawb.social avatar

Can I just say that I love the slow escalation that seems to be happening here?

Eventually we’ll just have an image with 50 animals cross posted to 49 communities.

Any love for the N64?

I don’t see many posts here about the N64 and it doesn’t look like there is an N64 community on lemmy.world It’s the console I have the most nostalgia for and I have over 130 games in my collection. I’m currently playing a ROM hack called SM64: Beyond the Cursed Mirror. It has some pretty challenging platforming but it...

Banjo-Kazooie and Ocarina of Time are games I had that I think have aged well and that I still play occasionally. I also enjoy watching speedruns of them.

Played a lot of Mario Kart as a kid, but I don’t think the “feel” is as good as the more modern versions.

savvywolf,
@savvywolf@pawb.social avatar

I’m at the age now where I know deep down the Wii is retro, but I don’t want to accept it.

@savvywolf@pawb.social avatar

There’s also !possums .

Or at least I think there is. I still don’t know the difference between an opossum and a possum.

savvywolf,
@savvywolf@pawb.social avatar

I’ve sunk so many hours into Slay the Spire, such a good game.

I think at this point it’s a “comfort game” for me that I go back to occasionally if I don’t feel like playing anything new or am having a bad day.

As well as what Mango said (I watch so many random videos, and I don’t think there’s a way to universally just give each one £1 or so), they are providing Youtube for free. Say what you want about Google, but Youtube does cost them a lot of money, and all things considered it’s a pretty well put together platform.

Yes, I’d like there to be a crowdfunded alternative, and yes I wish they weren’t so megacorpy and just let me download videos (it isn’t costing you anything if I watch a local copy!). But really, they provide a service and £6 or so is what I would consider a fair price.

I was never on /r/pikmin .
