Which one is is on the top of you list, if not a secret?

emacs + elfeed

Reasons:

  1. I’m using emacs for almost everything, so it it is a quite obvious choice
  2. Links to rss/atom are stored in a plain human readable org-mode file that you can edit manually or use VCS on top
  3. It works fine from both terminal and gui
  4. It is a fully OSS solution under The Unlicense

I’m not sure that lemmy users are different in this from user of Reddit/HackerNews/Facebook/etc.

Heavy plus. Especially due to the fact, that the app stores notes/todos as a plain human-readable text (org-mode format), no proprietary formats or vendor-lock to the app.

Cycling route across Eastern Serbia (lemmy.ml)

Hello! I would like to share the route I made for myself and my story how I finished it recently. The route I will describe starts in Belgrade, goes along the Danube River, through Djerdap National Park to the border with Serbia, and returns to Belgrade through Kucaj-Beljanica National Park. The route is compilation from parts...

No I don’t, but looks like I should :)

Longs story short, I’m using the cheapest Decathlon Triban 100 (~300 Eur) with replaced transmission. Instead of stock 7 speed one I installed Shimano Sora 34/50 & 11-34 (bought it on Aliexpress for 200 Eur). Also instead of stock tires I installed Continental Contact Plus 35 mm.

True, 1:1 (sora has 34:34) lowest gear is absolutely enough for all the climbings on this route. I guess even 34:32 may be enough, depends of physical condition of rider.

Help, no session?! (lemmy.world)

I just installed a cisco vpn. And after installing some required libraries I got the option to get rid of “unused” libraries. So I did ‘sudo apt autoremove’ as suggested. After I rebooted I no longer have a either x11 or wayland in the drop down menu. I can no longer login via the GUI....

Try to switch to console (ctr alt f2) and run xsession via startx. Or just try to install some meta package from console, like gnome-desktop (like sudo apt install gnome-desktop)

Anyway console (tty) is all what you have now and it should be rnough for restoring the system.

QT apps looks not so good in any GTK window environment… And they do not follow general setting about windows.

Does anybody here ride a folding bike? If so, what kind do you ride and how's your experience been?

A common frustration in my part of the world is that transit does not run very often, and there are only 2 spots for bikes on the front of buses. There have been many times when I’ve had to wait an extra hour just to see if the next bus happens to have a spot for my bike....

I have Strida SX.

Pros:

  • it is very good on the road, light frame, cool wheels;
  • you can roll it like a suitcase;
  • great fit for the city with a straight back;
  • you can go to metro, bus or elevator with it without any problem;
  • drive belt instead of chain: no way to stain pants by lubricant because there is no lubricant;

Cons:

  • 18 inch wheels make any toad curb a problem;
  • no way to lock the bike via locking to triangle (there is no monolithic triangle);
  • any rain or street dirt is a huge problem: due to the low profile parts are filled by dirt very fast;
  • maintenance cost: all the parts are original, last year I moved to the country that doesn’t have official Strida services and cannot even find a inner tube replacement here; also bike design is very complex, so there is no way to maintain it by yourself;

Limitstions: I rided even 50 kms per day with my Strida but cannot recommend it for rides longer than 10 km.

Avala Tower, Belgrade, Serbia (lemmy.ml)

Telecommunication tower built in 1965 according to the project of Uglješa Bogunović, Slobodan Janjić and Milan Krstić. Destroyed in an air raid in 1999, rebuilt according to the original project in 2010. One of the most famous examples of Yugoslavian Brutalism in architecture. A photo of the tower was included in the...

To be honest, I do not understand, why people try to judge quotes by its authors. If Adolf Hitler once said that Erarth is round, the authorship doesn’t make this quote automatically false. Even bloody dictators can say sometimes something truly, whats the problem here?

Putin: West put ethnic Jew to rule in Ukraine to 'cover glorification of Nazism' (www.unionleader.com)

Sept 5 (Reuters) - Russian President Vladimir Putin said in a television interview on Tuesday, without citing evidence, that Western powers had installed Volodymyr Zelenskiy, who is of Jewish heritage, as president of Ukraine to cover up the glorification of Nazism....

As a russian I can say that Putin is definitely crazy. He always was crazy a littlw due to his KGB past, you know, some tendency to overestimate impact of special servies and conspiracy. But I guess that the last drop was a covid pandemic when he sitted alone in bunker for a year in a total isolation. He totally out of mind. I do not think that one should seriously look at his speeches. Also, as a native russian speaker I watched a video interview and can proove that the translation is cirrect. He really said it…

Thank you. I hope too. But now it is not safe to be being in Russia and trying to get better government… So, for myself I just decided to leave the country. I’m not ready to risk my safety and safety of my family trying to protest against Putin. One can say that I’m a coward, but for me it change nothing: I prefer to be a healthy free coward instead of tortured hero in prison. To be honest, my only hope is that he die soon, there are a lot of rumors about his health problem, some cancer.

I left the country after the war. So, for me it changed significantly… But I’m a wrong person to ask how is it now. In my understanding it is bad.

sem,

To be honest, for me it looks as very strange pattern… If one wants to have static container with functions, there is Enums or classes.

I heard that both leading candidates for future presidential election in Argentina already told that they would ban the decision to join BRICS. Also, as I heard, parliament of Argentina also is mostly against BRICS. So, I do not expect to see Argentina in BRICS even after this invitation.

Recommendations for a FOSS Cross-Platform Note-Taking Application

Up to now I’ve been using Simplenote, which has a Linux client (but also Android & iOS) & supports live collaboration on notes. However, Simplenote hasn’t had a meaningful update for a long time, & it’s recently been behaving strangely, e.g. notes undeleting themselves, line duplications & undeletions....

It is argumentum ad hominem. Imo, doesn’t matter what site is it. If the site has a bad reputation just check sources twice but do not reject the article just because the site. That’s how I see it.
