I’m not linking this @snazzyq video just because it agrees with everything I’ve been saying for years on @atpfm about Apple and gaming…but it’s also not a coincidence that so many knowledgeable people have the same thoughts on the subject. https://youtu.be/ZZrnciMxksM

Here’s another example, from @flargh, who knows a little bit about gaming on the Mac: https://www.imore.com/mac/macos/game-porting-toolkit-in-macos-sonoma-wont-fix-whats-broken-with-mac-games

My siblings have a band (I’m not cool enough to be included) and their new music video is a great summer vibe. Please do check it out! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l6RJFdXM7Vg

@snazzyq Sure, but I bet they don’t even have a single Mac Pro among them.

@snazzyq Sorry we weren’t better mentors to you before you posted your sadly misguided list.

@paul What API does Ivory for Mac use to set custom app icons? I'm asking because I'm trying to figure out if my app can detect and display Ivory's custom icon when Ivory is running. Both NSWorkspace's icon(forFile:…) method and NSRunningApplication’s .icon property just return the standard icon, regardless of the custom icon set in Ivory's settings.

damn it @atpfm finally convinced me to get a membership to hear how they ranked all of the iPhones

@Mulderc Don’t forget the earlier member-special episodes, too!

The latest members-only special episode of @atpfm, where we made a tier list of every iPhone ever released, is also our first episode with a video version! https://atp.fm/atp-tier-list-every-iphone If you want to see the tier list as we build it, become a member and then look for the link to the video in the show notes for the episode.

My SwiftUI view and its containing NSHostingView/NSWindow are not getting along, and I think it's an Apple bug. I did my best to isolate and explain it in a sample project: https://github.com/siracusa/SwiftUIJitterBug

I filed this as FB12453748.

If any SwiftUI and/or AppKit folks want to tackle a subtle stumper, please take a look.

I can build Dice by PCalc as a native Reality OS app, but there isn't a way to draw the dice with depth unless I replace all the SceneKit rendering with RealityKit, as expected.

But, at least there is a route forwards, and I can relatively easily make it feel more native by moving the controls into ornaments outside the window, etc.

siracusa,
@siracusa@mastodon.social avatar

@jamesthomson Also, make the dice fall out of the window and onto the floor.

@atpfm related to the vergence/accommodation conflict in AR/VR, there’s a thing called fixation disparity where the eyes fail to point at in the same spot regardless of focus. I have this condition and while each individual eye has very good vision, both together produce a slightly doubled image which appears as a blur and the constant readjusting of the eye muscles causes constant headaches. This condition can he compensated by specialized prism-shaped glasses but those are fairly uncommon and by far not every optometrist even has the equipment to diagnose and measure this.

Is there anything known about if/how AR/VR headsets compensate for this? I’d honestly be surprised if they do.

siracusa,
@siracusa@mastodon.social avatar

@esther Prism lenses that are available in eyeglasses should also be possible in Vision Pro, but I have not heard if Apple will offer them.

If consumer tech churnalism can get worse than this, I don’t know how.

siracusa,
@siracusa@mastodon.social avatar

@codinghorror During press demos, people with glasses handed them to Apple for a moment to get measured. Then magnetic snap-in lenses were put into the Vision Pro so it could be used without glasses.

siracusa,
@siracusa@mastodon.social avatar

@codinghorror I believe everything viewable inside the headset is at a fixed focal distance, so progressives are not relevant/useful. Prisims, I don’t know.

23 years ago, IBM introduced the 1Gb Microdrive for laptops - it fit in your PCMCIA expansion slot, great for expanding your laptop storage. It sold for 500 dollars. We couldn’t wait for it to be available at retail.

This week I paid 10 dollars for 256 Gb micro as card to backup my zelda game.

Micro SD adapter and 256Gb micro sd card

@Migueldeicaza What did you do to back it up? I thought it had cloud saves enabled by default?

siracusa,

@Migueldeicaza Does it “move” it there or make a copy there?

Alex on Autos referred to the Toyota bZ4X as the "busy forks" and now, quite happily, I exclusively call it that!

You should, too

siracusa,
@siracusa@mastodon.social avatar

@TechConnectify Yeah, but he also pronounces the “touring” trim level as “two-ring,” so I’m not sure I’m onboard with his naming choices.
