Hey, Mastodon … I’m trying to track down an developer named Stephen A. Cronin.

He worked at and operated a software company called TapTech based out of Austin, Texas in the late 90s. I’ve managed to contact his former software partner, Francis Preve … but Francis lost touch with Stephen years ago.

Together they released a sequencer program for called NR404 and I’m hoping the source code still exists somewhere.

Boosts appreciated.

“With the increased limit of the acceptance queue, and a patched version of wrk, we can now conclude that swift is a good competitor speed-wise as a web application server.

Memory wise it blows all the other technologies away, using only 2.5% of the amount of memory that the java implementation needs, and 10% of node-js.”

I’m still seeing this pop-up on my iPhone a few times every week. It feels like it’s been over a year now…

@siracusa I reliably get this pop-up every single day.

Which is only made more annoying by the fact that it can’t by swiped away like other sheets on iOS. Instead you have to press the “Continue” or “X” button to dismiss it 🙃

Also, incidentally, Mick Jagger’s son is younger than his great-grandson.

About by PCalc for visionOS is now available!

Perhaps the most pointless app on Vision Pro, but still quite fun to play with. This is a complete remake of the original PCalc About screen in VR. It's basically me experimenting with what's possible today with RealityKit, over-engineering things as usual, and then for some inexplicable reason actually shipping it. I hope you enjoy it!

https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/about-by-pcalc/id1613982997?platform=vision

Hundreds of objects swirl around a PCalc icon.
A lovely view of the public transport options in the PCalc About screen.
A distant dragon watches over the city.

"More people were killed by U.S. law enforcement in 2023 than any other year in the past decade, outpacing population growth eightfold. C library functions are always like: "SYNOPISIS. This function converts foos into bars depending on the user locale. ARGUMENTS. src and dest pointers must be distinct; it is undefined behavior if they are not QPU-aligned. RETURN VALUE. Returns the number of foos converted. A zero value indicates failure, or that zero foos were converted. A negative value indicates that the final foo was only partially converted (function got tired). Check errno global to find out why."

A Massachusetts “millionaire’s tax” (extra 4% tax on $1M+ incomes) has earned the state more than $1.8 billion in income for fiscal 2023. That’s about double the estimates and the funds will be spent on education and transportation. https://www.wgbh.org/news/politics/2024-05-21/millionaires-tax-revenue-reaches-1-8-billion-on-pace-to-double-estimates

It’s unacceptable IMO that tvOS apparently doesn’t allows apps to use persistent storage. For instance, the new RetroArch game emulator has to store all your savegames, screenshots, ROMs in the Caches directory, which the OS may purge at any time without warning. poof

“your app can only access 500 KB of persistent storage … Outside of this limited local storage, all other data must be purgeable by the OS when space is low.” https://developer.apple.com/library/archive/documentation/General/Conceptual/AppleTV_PG/index.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/TP40015241-CH12-SW1 Why even sell the 128 GB Apple TV then?

Hard to argue with any of this. I love working in games, but the points about share-price-chasing and refusal to make small profitable games because they won’t make “enough” profit are things I’ve been banging on about for years.

So now SpaceX, with no working spacesuit, and years behind on it's multi-billion dollar moon lander, is lobbying NASA to go to the Hubble Space Telescope.

"A successful private mission could improve Hubble's ability to point at celestial objects and, by boosting its orbit, extend its life by years... however, an accident could leave the multibillion-dollar telescope broken — or, even more tragically, tethered to the dead bodies of the astronauts sent to repair it."

Starlink is killing Hubble

Something about this plan to move Hubble, didn't make sense. If the space telescope still has 10 years of useful life, why this risky SpaceX mission to boost it's orbit now?

Well it turns out the main thing threatening the utility of Hubble is... wait for it... SpaceX Starlink satellites, which orbit just above Hubble constantly "photo-bombing" the images. Within a few years there will be so many Starlinks that Hubble will be useless.
