I found #Kagi too expensive, but seeing how every alternative has just proven to just be #Bing is making me reconsider. #Startpage and #Peekr / #SVMetaSearch are also down. #search

@kerfuffle: hey, sorry for a quite long delay in response to this and your problems with usage of our service - we are already back up and way stronger, on a new domain and with rewrite up and running! We are looking for a feedback as this is a staging version (but stable enough to serve your searches).

If you are referring to the problems with heightened traffic we're struggling with for quite a few days, then I can assure you we've come ahead of this.

Hello! As an we are the folks at . Because we are aiming at international community we will post primarily in English.

We've moved instances despite the lower characters limit on the latter but we will keep it short and post stats in the picture form instead.

Our head of UI / UX thinks that current UI (of SVMetaSearch, not the Mastodon instance) is bad.

Do you agree with them?

DuckDuckGo once again shown its lack of interest in their users. That's a clear example of malvertising.

Meanwhile SVMetaSearch? Everyone can toss a buck to help us grow - but we will remain free of charge.

And we protect your privacy unlike DDG "does". First and foremost, we don't use 3rd-party advertising systems. Secondly, we don't broadcast adverts at all. And finally, we're open source.

We will have 200,000 sites indexed shortly!

Although some bigger sites are included there (we are mostly indexing the Polish internet), for now no indexed site comes from Facebook / Twitter / any other corporation-run big SM!

🇬🇧 Tommorow evening the server where our VPS is located will be offline in order to have the RAM memory upgraded. During this break we will be NOT available.

Remember we announced on our Codeberg repository we plan to be more independent? That's right, shortly we will have our own index based on ElasticSearch.

Before we switch to our own results system, we will be testing it on small subset of indexed pages, then gradually open our system to your websites!

After growing our index enough, all other sources will be disabled by default except Wikipedia and Wikidata to power infoboxes. Even in the future, you'll be still able to re-enable 3rd-party sources if you deem our source impractical.

For months we relied solely on 3rd-party sources, and yes - even our searches we do for you power the external algorithms, even those overseas and those of the biggest.

We hope in next several months, if we will have enough time, to have big enough index to be used instead. Not only we are building a Polish search engine, we are now moving to our resources overtime, making us 21st-century future true alternative for Google - from an European Union country.

I am also experimenting with favicons. Implementation is ready to be deployed but I want to make sure all favicons users will get in their search results are proxified each time.

Firstly I will use the 3rd-party API to fetch favicons (icon.horse) but as the time progresses I will implement my own favicon fetcher.

38,000 documents are in our index right now.

These mainly come from Polish sites, however some non-Polish sites are searchable, too.

Gonna not imagine when index reaches digits like 1,000,000 and updating scripts to compare if sites already exist will be definitely imminent.

svmetasearch, to random
@svmetasearch@pol.social avatar

even if it is available to be enabled (and it is by default), you won't find for now practically nothing - we will soon find a way to expand the index

expect frequent restarts as I will tackle with including the index into the results

Did you know? Peekr not only warns you that tracking takes place, but also lists out every single tracker found. For less clutter, this is off by default, but you can easily turn on these reports by flipping "Count website trackers" in settings.

It's as if I had uBlock Origin without uBlock Origin*.

Shipping soon with the first MVP.

  • Peekr doesn't block trackers, unfortunately.

The SearXNG instance, with the Peekr MVP launch in mind, has officially shut down. We will keep the svmetasearch.eu.org domain up and running, though. This will be a redirect to our new search engine project in the future, but we ask you to change defaults (to staging.peekr.org for now) if you were using SVMetaSearch as a primary engine in the past, as soon as possible.

If you know an another public SearXNG instance allowing users to download JSON results, please contact us and we will swap defaults in Peekr's settings.

Slight update for the algorithm in our index:

  • titles are now prioritised with the weight of 3;
  • URLs come second, with the weight of 1.5;
  • finally, descriptions - we observed not every document indexed had an "og:description" meta tag. These have the default weight of 1.

In case you don't like these changes, we're open for suggestions. The update will be pushed soon after more experimental queries.

Luckily, we don't have X in our name but still because the founder's favourite letter is S, here's our brand new logo which was made in like 10 minutes using Lunacy.

Because we are about to hit 100 followers, a friendly reminder: SVMetaSearch is made out of passion. We had not took any venture capital funding, and will NOT accept it ever.

We will be trying our best to be truly independent from big corporations or venture capitalists, so that's why we are asking you to tip a small donation weekly / monthly depending which platform you decide to use:

Any boosts are appreciated!

At SVMetaSearch we believe privacy should be a human right.

Regarding Topics API, we will be soon applying fake header values to mislead Google no matter what you search for on SVMS.

To clarify, here's the taxonomy Google uses in their Topics API: https://github.com/patcg-individual-drafts/topics/blob/main/taxonomy_v2.md

Also, we are planning to do some technical works regarding SSL autorenewal mechanism. It broke, and not fixing it will make us doomed, because we use HSTS. Short downtime periods (mainly "no secure connection" errors) are expected.

We've learned about a strange bug during searching through our index. Investigating.

Edit: fixed

Should there be a local search history? In extension, all saved in cookies only (up to last 5 searches or so), and not transferred beyond the currently used device.

Of course we get that search histories are sensitive, so this will be disabled by default.
