I agree that the steam machine was too early. People hadn’t been fully disillusioned by the planned obsolescence of their console libraries yet. Today, in a world of $600+ consoles that are impossible to find within 2 years of their release, hardly any worthwhile exclusives, and Nintendo trying to make you repurchase the old games at full price again, a steam console could potentially sweep the industry.

I admit, everything I know about Ubuntu is heresay as I don’t use it myself. But I was under the impression that there was a lot of telemetry that they send back, and ads/bloatware they ship with to subsidize their development.
Oh yeah, totally agree it’s not the same as windows. I said if their concern about windows was privacy, Ubuntu won’t feel different. It’ll feel like they’re letting you use their PC. I still get that sense from all descriptions I hear. I forgot about the ads in the terminal, that’s wild.
The only part I think I was wrong about was the level of consent requested from the user. I was under the impression that they were kinda like Firefox, opting the user into telemetry sharing by default, making the refusal of data sharing more obtuse or hidden than it should be. But my impression that ubuntu still serves ads and still feels like someone else letting you use their system sounds accurate.
It sounds like you use Ubuntu, so you could probably let me know where I’m wrong.
Unfortunately, I think you’re a rare breed. I’ve met people in graphic design and marketing who will actually defend advertising practices in the face of the incontrovertible fact that: I don’t like it.
We’re past the point of “you just don’t know what you want” and well into “we’re going to hold you down and shove it down your gd throat” territory.
How do you feel about hidden achievements? Or ones that are basically riddles, or otherwise unclear from their description how to get it? Or ones that represent a clear challenge far beyond the primary intended path of play (not just “collect all the things”, but accomplish X task in a time period or with a loadout you didn’t think possible)?
Honestly, I feel like you’re being bizarrely calm about the situation. This is so far beyond unacceptable that one or both of them should be immediately fired for this offense, lest you have an open-and-shut hostile work environment lawsuit on your hands.
I would make sure to keep the text as evidence and let HR know about it. If the guys are somehow not fired, and ever approach you again or try to retaliate in any way, go consult a lawyer.
Which is exactly why not having an HR dept is only detrimental for the company, not the employee. If the company doesn’t have an HR dept, they should consult a lawyer for a hostile work environment case. The lawyer will probably say he should first at least let his supervisor know, and if nothing is done, or if they retaliate, then they can show them why an HR dept is a good investment.
Don’t delete it, don’t act like this is a minor inconvenience, walk directly to HR or your supervisor and tell them what is going on. This is will-not-work-until-this-matter-is-resolved levels of unacceptable.

I’m glad you can recognize how important this is to a kid. So many wow raiders in the 00s were ostracized by society for being this dedicated to a team of other humans and a shared goal. It really is something we need to learn to embrace and harness. I love the unique emotional responses that video games are capable of eliciting in people that movies and tv never could.
In theory, capitalism is supposed to create exactly that environment. The problem is we have a society that doesn’t believe in proper regulation to prioritize the wellbeing of the society over that of the achievements and desires of individuals.
So much like how modern WoW has transformed into this uninteresting, solved meta that requires weakauras to do your thinking, gold buying to have gear and reagents, and no interesting competition for loot, our society is now an uninteresting solved meta where the wealthy nullify any possibility of competition, everyone is employed as wageslaves with a corporate handbook doing their thinking for them, and there’s no safety net to allow anyone take a chance at working together on interesting projects to actually compete.
The problem isn’t that we have capitalism, it’s that capitalism is synonymous with patriotism.
Seems orthogonal. I don’t care how regulation is accomplished, just that it is. I feel like the tax levels and safety nets we had in place ~70 years ago were fine, until red scare propaganda convinced everyone to vote against their own interests.

I haven’t finished it yet, but AW2 is a dramatic step up in the entire experience. They still “pay homage” to the original combat, but there aren’t nearly as many enemies. If you’re familiar with the Control story and like that universe, I’d say it’s a must play.
Does it need to be connected to the internet? At that age, I think you could get away with installing stuff locally that they could play with.
IMO you should create guard rails that you intend her to eventually understand and circumvent. Nothing is more empowering for a kid interested in tech than thinking they figured out how to get around the guard rails. Just make sure you can detect when it has happened.
Do something locally on the machine to block internet access. Maybe something as simple as turning off the network adapter. One day she’ll either learn enough about the system to remove the guard rails, or she’ll find other interests.

Microsoft “fingerprints” your machine when you activate windows on it. You can completely replace the hard drive and reinstall windows from scratch, and they’ll figure out your activation on their end.
Yeah, I think it’s just a matter of scale on the internet. Early on for unity (and right now, for Godot), it feels like a small community of people working around issues together toward a common goal. If Godot ever reaches the scale and prevalence of unity, I expect the communities to deteriorate into impersonal toxicity just the same. I saw it in reddit subs, and see it in Lemmy communities. I don’t know how to combat it besides jumping ship and starting fresh once it gets unwieldy.
Well that’s reassuring that it’s possible. I wonder how much effort is put into moderation, or if there are any community guidelines that make a difference.
