teawrecks,

It really feels like he's speedrunning killing reddit. I'm not even mad, it's impressive 🍿

Anyone want to collaborate on a new Lemmy UI? Built in Svelte (github.com)

There's a ton of issues with the UI I want to address and there's a number of things I want to experiment such as how communities are subscribed to, so I started writing a new UI in SvelteKit. I also have Capacitor setup which would allow this to triple as a native iOS and Android application....

teawrecks,

No. If it can do everything it needs to do in the browser, then that's where it should stay.

teawrecks,

Yeah, revolt looks nice and is clearly trying to be a drop in replacement for discord, so that will make adoption easier.

However it doesn't seem ready yet. The client notes that their voice chat feature is in the middle of being re-written from scratch. The legacy voice chat just doesn't work for me (on Linux). Discord isn't great on Linux, but it's more usable that revolt right now.

Also, for better or worse, it's not actually federated, it's just open source. So there is a central revolt server that new users automatically use, and if you want to operate elsewhere, as far as I can tell, you effectively modify the client to reference a different server.

teawrecks,

This feels like a joke poster in a head shop

teawrecks,

I don't know for sure it's a steam issue, but in the last few days my bluetooth controller (xb elite 2) has been very inconsistent about connecting to steam and any games launched from steam. jstest doesn't see any problem, but often Steam's Test Device Inputs won't get anything from it, or if it does, the game might not. One day it'll work, the next it won't without me having changed anything 🤷. Plugging in over USB gets rid of all issues.

Also, the new big picture mode on nvidia is very low framerate. Sub 10fps. It's not great.

teawrecks,

Just look at all the people who claim to hate Musk and everything he stands for, but continue using Twitter like nothing changed.

teawrecks,

I tried using chocolatey when I was on windows. The problem you run into is that windows programs often want to update themselves, often automatically, and they don’t tell the package manager about it so it gets out of sync (maybe winget has a reliable solution for that, don’t know, I’ve never used it).

It’s really useful for setting up a new system though, ex. installing a particular environment on a test machine.

teawrecks,

Isn't the federated model specifically designed as a solution to undesired moderation? If a server is ban happy, users won't go there. Problem solved?

teawrecks,

But that's not a task that is asked of a general user, even if their goal is to switch servers. If you don't like gmail, the solution for an individual is almost never to start your own email server.

teawrecks,

Outer Wilds. But I already know everything that happens. So I prefer watching a stream/VOD of someone playing it for the first time.

Linus Torvalds -- Creator of Linux -- defends gun regulation, woke communists, womens rights AND trans rights. Linux is political! (cdn.masto.host)

Linus' thread: (CW: bigotry and racism in the comments) https://social.kernel.org/notice/AWSXomDbvdxKgOxVAm (you need to scroll down, i can't seem to link to the comment in the screenshot)

@morgthorak I think you might want to make sure you don’t follow me.

Because your “woke communist propaganda” comment makes me think you’re a moron of the first order.

I strongly suspect I am one of those “woke communists” you worry about. But you probably couldn’t actually explain what either of those words actually mean, could you?

I’m a card-carrying atheist, I think a woman’s right to choose is very important, I think that “well regulated militia” means that guns should be carefully licensed and not just randomly given to any moron with a pulse, and I couldn’t care less if you decided to dress up in the “wrong” clothes or decided you’d rather live your life without feeling tied to whatever plumbing you were born with.

And dammit, if that all makes me “woke”, then I think anybody who uses that word as a pejorative is a f*cking disgrace to the human race. So please just unfollow me right now.
teawrecks,

I don't think we get to use cold reason to determine if something is political or not, just like a dictionary doesn't control the meaning of a word, nor does a small group of ants decide what the colony does next. If Linus came out as a right wing extremist, it wouldn't matter how apolitical the linux source code is, people would decide to distance themselves from him and everything he represents. Something is political the moment a society perceives it as relevant to their politics.

teawrecks,

The twitter/elon thing is hilarious. I honestly do think he accidentally got himself into quite the pickle and now his pride is keeping him there. As for reddit and twitch, I don't assume these are the surface-level-dumb moves that we think they are. My guess is that this is a calculated means of rolling out the changes they actually want by:

  1. overshooting
  2. letting everyone get mad
  3. backing off to their actual changes (or something close)
  4. letting everyone think they've won
  5. and finally push forward a bit more once everyone is preoccupied with the next thing

Internet users love to cancel shit, but at the same time, are always looking for the next thing to cancel. So as much as people hate twitter or facebook or tiktok or youtube or windows or nintendo or chick-fil-a or whatever, they're all just looking for an excuse to forget all about it, and continue using their product as quickly as possible. And corporations know that, so they've worked "giving them that excuse" into their plans.

teawrecks,

Give it time.

That is to say, to the extent that we can, let's be careful. We already see the same shit everyone criticizes Twitter for starting to show up on mastodon. It's often not the platform that causes problems, it's the people.

I think there needs to be a set of "commandments" for civil discourse on the internet. One specific rule I've made for myself but never heard anyone else mention is: don't dogpile on downvoted comments. I think everyone feels a pull to do it, they see a controversial post that they agree with, they see the top few comments are more of the same....so they scroll down to the lowest voted replies, expand them if they're hidden, get enraged by someone's stupid world view, and jump into a flame war.

Some might lump that in with "don't feed the trolls", but I'll counter with a second rule: it's better to just not reply to someone than to accuse them of being a troll or a bot. There exist people who live with a wildly different set of information from you, and thus often have wildly different worldviews. And that's ok. And if it turns out they actually are a troll or a bot, as long as you're replying, they're winning.

How has ur lemmy experience been so far?

Im joining in on the reddit ditching thing, and was kinda worried at first that i wouldnt be able to like use it the way i did reddit as it feels like a whole new place, but after engaging with posts and people and actually being a part of lemmy rather than being lurk mode all the time i was pleasantly surprised with how easy it...

teawrecks,

I'm liking the platform, but it could use more niche subs. Doesn't matter what it is, I can always assume that there exists a subreddit for everything. I hope to see lemmy get there one day.

teawrecks,

Ever played Bioshock?

teawrecks,

Welcome! And say goodbye to your wallet :D

But seriously, I'm curious why this is your first. Always stuck to console before? Finally got some extra spending money? New to gaming in general?

teawrecks,

teawrecks,

Most of the Dark Pictures Anthology games have pretty mediocre ratings, but at this point my friends and I look forward to each release. It's like a 10 hour long horror movie night. They're just long enough to start right after lunch on a sat, and play late into the night, passing the controller around.

Their last release The Devil In Me is rated around 5/10, yet it might be my favorite one to date. It's not uncommon for them to have a rocky release with bugs, so sometimes we give them a few months to patch it up. But honestly, one of the best local coop experiences I've had. Definitely recommend if you have some friends over.

teawrecks,

As long as you can get the driver installed, you're fine. The only time that might be a problem is if your distro updates something that breaks compatibility with the existing driver, and X refuses to start. You'll need to know how to install the latest driver from the command line, but then you should be good.

I've been running a 3080 with proprietary drivers on manjaro for a couple of years (I would not recommend manjaro, I now recommend endeavorOS if you want something Arch based) and it's fine. I don't think I've ever hit an nvidia specific bug.
