bedrooms,

TL;DR? Tech companies shouldn’t be so complacent about the purported “inevitability” of AI tools. Ordinary people don’t tend to adopt technologies that keep failing in annoying and unpredictable ways, and it’s only a matter of time until we see the hackers using these new AI assistants maliciously. Right now, we are all sitting ducks.

I don’t know about you, but I intend to wait a little longer before letting this generation of AI systems snoop around in my email.

This is probably the longest TL;DR I've ever read, and that tells something about my reading impression of this text.

Tighten the restrictions again please. Back China into a corner so that they can innovate themselves out of it and we can have some proper competition. This is great news.

What a dumb assumption to make that China would crumble without Western tech. Do they think the rest of the world would just return to the dark ages ? Do they believe non-Westerners can't think? So dumb.

As someone who grew up around doctors and knew a brain surgeon, I can say with 100% confidence that everybody who rides a bike should wear a helmet. I feel like the average person has very little idea of how fragile we are, how easy it can be to get a traumatic brain injury, and how much of a nightmare your life can become. (This applies even more if you need to ride on the street or if you plan to ride at high speeds.)

    admiralteal,

For example, basically all power tool batteries.

If they advertise ~12V, it usually means it is 3 'cells' of 18650s in series. Crack open the case on such a tool battery and you'll find just that -- 3 18650 batteries for a little one. A high capacity battery might instead of 6, with 3 pairs of 2 parallel batteries, doubling the capacity. And nothing but weight and size stops them from just making them ever-larger.

18-20v tools are 6 cells (18v is the nominal voltage, 20v is the 'max' voltage at full charge). For higher cap, add more batteries in parallel in each series cell.

It is RARE to be able to service these unless you have some specialized skills. Typically, they are spot welded together, which can be dangerous to attempt to DIY. That said, often when a battery 'fails', it's actually just one 18650 that has failed and taken the others down with it.

These days you do see other sizes. 21700s or even pouch batteries are starting to be more common when tools need more stored joules per unit volume.

@Greenpepper I actually appreciate how Musk ruined Twitter. I was never fan of that service anyway. That means alternatives have a chance to grow. :-) Thank you Elon.

That's because Google is on the far side of the track that tech companies follow.
They start out as people passionate about what they are doing. As those people leave they tend to replaced by spreadsheet readers that only have a passion for personal gain.

I was all set to start bitching about the obligatory 10-15 minutes of "older, medicated suburban housewife shows off her whole yarn closet, every needle, which needle she likes (it's not better, it's just pretty), her fingernails, pushes her state-mandated store, and then finishes off with an internet recipe story about how her gramgram was fleeing the war and had to knit jasmine stitch backwards to survive......before fucking up the stitch and never editing that part out. But it's ok because her hands were in the way the whole time anyway."

But I think you've found the only thing that has me beat.

I will at least use this time to implore any knitting/crochet peeps on the fediverse that if you or someone you love is uploading how-to videos anywhere on the web.....SHOW ME THE DAMN STITCH SO I CAN LEAVE. I HAVE PROJECTS, I DO NOT CARE.

    bedrooms,

I don't buy that. He tried to cancel the purchase. He's also losing money, and so it's definitely not a 3D chess.
