unionagainstdhmo, to news in ABC says Laura Tingle's Sydney Writers' Festival comments did not meet editorial standards
@unionagainstdhmo@aussie.zone avatar

I agree with her statement, my problem is that it is a very polarising statement and she knows it. It is a waste of time arguing over whether Australia is racist and what that means, but a better use of time is to work out how to make life better for Indigenous Australians and other groups Australia is potentially racist towards.

I don’t know why they sacked Andrew Probyn and kept Tingle, all she’s trying to do is prop up culture war politics in Australia, something we definitely don’t need and certainly shouldn’t have from the ABC.

Culture wars get the Coalition in power, culture wars killed the Voice to Parliament. Culture wars mean Labor won’t do anything because it might involve them and it means we get bullshit policy from the Coalition

I admire your boldness in calling the UN “out of touch and destructive” while not responding to any arguments. No the Liberal party are right, not the rest of the world. Do a basic google search next time, here, I did one for you:

It really annoys me when the pro-genocide people put up the Australian flag as well. Why do they do it? Are they trying to say that Australia is allied with Israel, thus Australians should support it? As of late at least it looks like foreign policy is moving towards maybe not very happy about it perhaps.

You could be promoting it since you don’t have a reliable source to back up your claim and could be completely full of shit to justify your own habits - or not. It depends and I don’t want to go researching illicit substances

A preemptive reminder for anyone not familiar:

It is against the community rules to promote anything that is illegal in Australia.

You are welcome to discuss the article and illicit drugs but not in a way to promote them for recreational use (exceptions can be made where there is scientific consensus).

@unionagainstdhmo@aussie.zone avatar

If properly subsidised, decent frequency public transport in the shithole known as suburbia could be possible and in fact it is possible and does happen at least to some extent in SEQ, the way it’s running however, is not as efficient as it could be (i.e. buses go to trains not compete with trains). If we built enough transport “hubs” with sufficient car parking and bike parking it’s certainly possible. There’s even public transport in country towns.

Welcome to QLD trains! We have a line called the Beenleigh Line which goes all stops through some of the dodgiest parts of Logan and Brisbane and I don’t think fares are stopping people from getting on and if you’ve had an uneventful ride on the Beenleigh Line you should ask for your money back

what sources??

Edit: nevermind worked it out

Yeah AI companies are being stupid using Reddit, Twitter and StackExchange, but there’s no magic fix to get more diverse AI. Would they need to pay people of underrepresented groups to write training material? Is that racist? Why should they get paid when everyone else is doing it for free?

I don’t think they were being intentionally racist when they made the dictionaries for auto-correct - the article says it only accounts for around 41% of English names - but most modern auto-correct things on phones at least seem to add words to your dictionary if you use them a lot, and they’ve probably been limited by file size requirements in the past.

There’s a few issues with this article, namely auto-correct doesn’t use any AI as such (I believe, it’s a pretty old thing). I agree with the general argument that the name dictionaries of these auto-correct should be expanded to recognise more names, but I think labeling it “racist” is moronic. I also take issue with this weird dig:

"The big problem is a lot of artificial intelligence scrapes the internet, whether it’s writing or music or blog sites or whatever, and so much of the stuff on the internet has been made by white men.

"Effectively, AI is starting to mimic those white men, and you can see that AI on a number of platforms is increasingly becoming kind of racist and more sexist.

I don’t think it’s “white men” that are the problem - it’s snarky redditors and stack exchange contributors. I’d might as well blame Italians for fascism or Muslims for 9/11.

Like it or not AI needs training data - and if you want a more diverse training set get out there and make it for free like everyone else does. It’s a shame how sites like Twitter and Facebook have kind of killed personal blogs and promote shorter-form content which is harder to find, it’s amazing how much useful stuff I find comes from random old blogs.

I wonder if any of the mainstream media will challenge him on this. Would this help McBride’s appeal?
