Well if lemmy.world was broken into a bunch of smaller instances instead of the behemoth that is we wouldn’t have this problem - but the reddit thing happened and here we are. Updates are on the way and you can always donate to further Lemmy development

This is a good comment under which to point out that aussie.zone is powered by donations, so if you have the means and like this instance you can help out with running costs here

She points to the head start Jerome is being given, saying that 90 per cent of the $20,000 a year he makes is being put into an account for him when he’s an adult.

90%? Yeah I’m sure he agreed to this, but that’s 18k a year (assuming it continues at this rate with no interest, etc. by the time he’s 18 it’ll be whatever is in there now + 252k) and I mean it is a pretty good head start. But still like what future implications is this going to have for him?

  • Will he get bullied in high school?
  • Miss out on jobs over baby photos?
  • Be discouraged from studying by having so much money?
  • AI generated CSAM?

Call me out of touch but all of those things are possible. Plus what is his work arrangement? What are his rights? I thought you had to be 14 or something to be able to work. The fact that his mum justifies it with money is absurd, and I’m sure she’s enjoying that extra 2k a year.

Crazy idea: Children aren’t property

I like how one of the mums pulls out this argument:

When we ask Kym whether she thinks she contributed to sexualising Bobbi, she says no.

“Do you watch the Olympics? They do gymnastics, they do swimming. Bobbi, a lot of the time, is more covered than that,” she says.

"It’s like telling a woman, ‘You shouldn’t go out in public dressed like that because you could get raped.’

Only difference is the olympians made an informed decision as adults to go to the olympics (I do agree that there are some sleezebags who try to make women’s sport uniforms and rules overly sexualised), while you daughter had her account created at 7 and it was probably not explained what the consequences could be.

Fully agree, I think the reason why parents aren’t questioning it is because they are addicted to it as well, but fail to recognise the mental health problems because they are a bit older and probably more resilient. They don’t understand that the way a child’s mind works is very different to that of an adult and wayyy more vulnerable. Deleting my Instagram account was one of the best things I have ever done for my mental health. All commercial social media is shit, but also so is Lemmy when used not through the web UI (i.e. an app that will let you scroll forever on ‘all’).

Are there any updates on the ongoing federation delays with lemmy.world?

I know there’s been a few posts about this before, but it’s been a month since the last one and it’s still ongoing. It doesn’t seem that any of the LW admins responded to Zag’s post on their help community, and the last response from lodion/Nath I’m aware of was from 4 months ago when there were outright federation...

I’ve made a pinned post over in !australia for any confused lemmy.world users who are posting comments which aren’t getting any interaction in our communities. If there are any issues with the content of the post I can fix it up

@unionagainstdhmo@aussie.zone avatar

Thanks, I’ve done that now, kind of thought it might be a bit annoying. I’m in two minds over unpinning the tax scam one, on the one hand it’s basically as old as the community and on the other it’s somewhat useful info

Keeping pet cats indoors would save millions of native animals and billions of dollars. So what's stopping us? (www.abc.net.au)

Broader adoption of keeping cats safe at home would have large benefits for cat welfare, human health, local wildlife and even the economy. So, should cat owners be required to keep their pets contained to their property?...

I didn’t realise this was so controversial. All we need now is some hexbear user to stumble across this thread and instigate a mass pile-on (luckily they’ve decided not to federate with us anymore so we should be safe).

If anyone does notice the conversation get a bit out of hand please report it and we’ll deal with it accordingly

unionagainstdhmo,
@unionagainstdhmo@aussie.zone avatar

That is definitely a fair call, locking it now.

unionagainstdhmo,
@unionagainstdhmo@aussie.zone avatar

The discussion here has gone a bit off the rails, and it’s reached the point where discussion is no longer meaningful. As such I am locking this thread. If you believe you have something meaningful to contribute to the broader discussion create a new post.

jimcullen, to brisbane

UQ's Camp Solidarity still going strong. The pro-genociders seem to have given up though. @brisbane

unionagainstdhmo, (edited )
@unionagainstdhmo@aussie.zone avatar

There was an email on Friday, UQ want the camps to leave as they are a distraction as the university heads into the examination period at the end of Semester 1. It seems that UQ don’t want to budge on the Boeing relationship, so I doubt the campers will either. news.com.au has a dramatised article on the situation:

I think we need a video on why it would be a good idea, because I can’t think of one (at least for the general public). I mean it is a good idea from the perspective of people with multiple properties and mortgages even on their own home because it will keep prices high

unionagainstdhmo,
@unionagainstdhmo@aussie.zone avatar

Please no lowballers or time wasters. I WILL NOT RESPOND TO MESSAGES ASKING IF IT IS STILL AVAILABLE, IF THE POST IS UP IT IS AVAILABLE.

Or clean it, and then wonder why their ad has been up for 12 weeks without any responses

unionagainstdhmo,

Should we change this community’s banner image to be this image?

unionagainstdhmo,
@unionagainstdhmo@aussie.zone avatar

No you:

According to the affidavit, McBride wanted Australians to know that “Afghan civilians were being murdered and Australian military leaders were at the very least turning the other way and at worst tacitly approving this behaviour”.

He continued: “At the same time, soldiers were being improperly prosecuted as a smokescreen to cover [leadership’s] inaction and failure to hold reprehensible conduct to account.”

theguardian.com/…/war-crimes-whistleblower-david-…

unionagainstdhmo,
@unionagainstdhmo@aussie.zone avatar

Riddle me this then: Why would he hand evidence of war crimes being committed to a journalist if HE wanted people to know that soldiers weren’t committing war crimes?

That Four Corners episode came out fairly recently. Tell me, what motives would Dan Oakes, an investigative journalist with a reputation, have to disparage a whistleblower who is about to be prosecuted? I dunno, maybe he doesn’t want to be the target of prosecution himself and distancing from him is protection?

Why do you keep referring to the BBC article? It’s quite poorly worded and oversimplified for an international audience. You won’t find many articles about David McBride’s motives from before the case because he was secret then, the ABC gave him up.

unionagainstdhmo,
@unionagainstdhmo@aussie.zone avatar

So it’s either A:

  • David McBride is an idiot who misinterpreted what was happening as a defence lawyer investigating war crimes
  • War crimes happened
  • Commanders and Politicians aren’t smart enough to cover up war crimes committed by PR exercises like Ben Roberts-Smith by investigating otherwise innocent soldiers

Or B:

  • David McBride is not an idiot
  • War crimes happened
  • Commanders and Politicians are smart enough to attempt to cover up war crimes committed by the likes of Ben Roberts-Smith (Australia’s most decorated soldier, was used to ‘sell’ the war to Australians).

I choose B, but hey, you know better because of some random BBC article and an ABC hit piece

unionagainstdhmo,
@unionagainstdhmo@aussie.zone avatar

He couldn’t have taken them to Spain: that wouldn’t be responsible and he’d probably get busted. He could destroy the documents, but he wouldn’t be able to take credit and try to drive up more awareness. Don’t mistake intelligence for stupidity

unionagainstdhmo,
@unionagainstdhmo@aussie.zone avatar

I’m pretty sure he thought war crimes were happening, he just thought they were investigating the wrong soldiers to cover up for higher-ranking and more decorated soldiers like Ben Roberts-Smith to pretend that they cared about war crimes

unionagainstdhmo,
@unionagainstdhmo@aussie.zone avatar

I think he’d be pissed off at the ABC for missing the point and just covering the war crimes, effectively covering up the arses of those higher up.

soldiers were being wrongly accused and illegally investigated for war crimes.

Could mean exactly what I said as well

investigating the wrong soldiers to cover up

That’s what I said. The two statements are not mutually exclusive
