Coming to the end of writing revisions to a conferemce paper. Now 350 words over the maximum, and one of the comments was already that it was too long.
This process is really bloody hard.

@grahamdunning I treat any word limits as a guideline, and find it ok to disagree with reviewers ;)

@sean_ae æ-ziq ? Reminds me of talking to my friends after going to the warp lighthouse party and it was clear that we'd all seen different autechres. No one knew what anyone looked like in those days and the information architecture was not strong that night. Also you didn't play your greatest hits

@sean_ae Heh yes that rings a distant bell!! and tells me we probably had the right autechre then ;)

If you're on an online community, please search "elephant in the room" and share what the elephants are.

Here's the ones from the future of coding slack:

  • DCI architecture (not sure what that is)
  • Haskell crypto
  • Code quality
  • Incoherence of ownership
  • No one in UK government listens to evidence
  • Functional reactive programming
  • IDEs
  • Browsers being crap at resizing in tiling window managers
  • The elephant being the room
  • Bret Victor

Open access is all good, but non-academic folks now have to pay as much as $1k to contribute a paper to an ACM conference, on top of registration cost and other expenses. Perversely, this could see academic computer scientists become even more isolated.. https://audiomostly.com/2024/call/acm-policy/ https://www.acm.org/publications/icps/author-guidance

@TodePond For some reason I alternated pasting the bottom one between the left and right ones and realised like all good FoC demos it was generating the fibonacci sequence

When I first started making algorithmic music with Ade Ward 24 years ago (as Slub), we decided to only make music with software we'd made ourselves. I've mostly stuck to that aim ever since, although after a couple of years we added a rule that we'd make a fundamental part of the software during performances to keep things interesting.
I'm starting to get a bit fed up with just doing that so now I'm thinking about adding an additional rule - only live code algorithmic music that I can run without a computer. My plan is to switch between live coding and manually performing algorithms. If I'm brave enough I'll try this out for my next gig..

I've been thinking about doing a bigger live coding event in Sheffield but it's difficult to get funding to pay artist fees and expenses, and it's not really possible to cover them from ticket sales. In the old days people often weren't paid to play but this excludes people who can't afford it.. But it was much easier to make events happen. How do people feel about this these days, both organisers and people travelling to perform (and of course those who do both)?

yaxu,
@yaxu@post.lurk.org avatar

@vegemitepumpkin Yep that sounds good. One problem is that different people have very different benchmarks to compare themselves with financially, and the more privileged background you have the less familiar you are with the idea of sharing what you have..
Plus academics in particular are very used to claiming for expenses whereas others aren't even familiar with the process of invoicing.

Today I learned there exists a thing called two body coupled oscillators, which can be mass spring or pendulums in series and they're chaotic.

My questions:

  • Are there any physical musical instruments that use this as their sound generation system?

  • Can this be modelled using a standard analogue modular synthesiser?

  • Is there any sample code of using this kind of system to generate audio or control waves for DSP?
