I'm trying to make a synthesized recreation of a 909 ride cymbal for "fun".
It's really challenging. There's something special going on with the relationship between the partials. They're not harmonic, but they're not random either.
@williamfields@yaxu you prob already know this, but on the offchance - the snare and clap share a noise source, so when they play together it has a weird phasey sound you can't get using samples.
the vst versions of it prob work the same way (not tested but it would be a bit weird if they didn't)
I kind of feel that not enough is made of how the far-right has weaponised the internet and is totally undermining democracy. Like everyone knows it but is there much being done to oppose it? At this point I think there's every possibility that reform uk will win loads of seats in the next election here, and win the election after that, just by manipulating public opinion on otherwise uncontroversial issues like active travel and human rights.
not to underplay the effects of online manipulation/astroturfing/bots etc, but the fact print media has been in freefall for a while means outrage = clicks = revenue for most news outlets. tv news is no different really. everything is a 'debate' now.
and the left are traditionally way easier to divide because there are so many minorities with diff concerns; the rise of gotcha-ism is super easy to leverage for the right, exaggerating fault lines that have always existed but been kept quiet.
and then add in the fact that every time something outrageous happens on the right, the left media think it's a great idea to never shut up about it, giving it oxygen etc.
during a brief outage of lurk just then, i logged into an old account on mastodon.social and discovered that apparently you can do post searching there now(!?)
something i had no idea about
Primeval is the quality I hear running through these two. In Oversteps' string-like sounds – guitar, harp, dulcimer – as if modelled after echoes found in ancient archaeology, and Eton Alive's howls about society.
Happy Anniversary, @sean_ae & Rob; and Jason & Andrew!
If I set all my gear up in a studio - I seem to lose all will to play!
But the moment I put some stuff on the floor, make a mess and sprawl around, or sit with one bit of gear on the sofa, I suddenly start having fun and feeling creative!
@kel less pressure, comfier, no unused gear staring at you.
i noticed after a while in a room it goes away for me, like i start living in there and it just becomes my normal space. stops feeling like i'm working a job iykwim.
like, i love working but i don't like jobs.
Flying in the slipstream of 1997's four-quartered Envane, Quaristice was the first Autechre release I caught as it happened. Pretty sure it was in the buildup that Mary Anne Hobbs whetted my appetite by playing 'Simmm' on the radio. And I once toyed with 'chenc9' in Pure Data for an unstaged show of The Wizard of Oz!
Ingredients:
• ¼ disc of goz, scratched
• ¼ disc of latent, recalled from memory
• ¼ disc of laughing, roughly chopped
• ¼ disc of draun, sawn and peeled to reveal the soft, dreamy interior
Method:
Layer everything up on a platter and spin.
@sean_ae
i did a rough rework of Saw You, dunno how close it is to real master by you but i guess its gonna work at least for now lol
hope u dont mind, made it so i have at least something from that tape in my collection
btw where does that string/pad thing originates from? my friend sent me a sample of guitar string and i used it as a result
iirc that sound was a tx81z. was prob an edited preset cos it was only the first time we used one.
one of a handful of tracks we did in daz fitton's studio above dr rock (drake st, rochdale). we'd meet him in the shop at 6pm and he'd give us the keys and leave us in there all night, so we had to fig it all out by ourselves.
the tracks came out sort of ok considering, but after a bit we realised we were doing better stuff at home, so it goes.
was good experience though, learned some stuff, and very cool of daz to let us do that.
If on a flight the attendant ever asks you to put away that laptop for landing, you answer "don't worry darling, it is securely and comfortably attached to me" in your best Tim Robbins impression.
