Why do instances not run ads?

It probably goes against the philosophy or whatever of FOSS or Lemmy itself, but why not be a little evil so that you can actually sustain yourself? Donations can bring us far, but small non-intrusive ads can be a bliss in the skies for the people actually hosting the instance. Especially if there are millions of users uploading...

Most Mastodon, Friendica, Calckey instances accept donations.

It is likely that kbin/Lemmy instances will likely follow the same model.

Advertising would not work on the Fediverse as the adverts would be blocked by other instances so the spread would be very limited so not attractive commercially.

That is one of the beauties of the federated model.
Also, as there is no algorithm or data about user interests there's no scope for advert targeting which advertisers would want.

The whole ethos of the is anti commercial.

bad science

In 1912 Henry Herber Goddard published a book called "The Kallikak Family: A Study in the Heredity of Feeble-Mindedness".

This purported to demonstrate that 'feeble mindedness' was hereditary. It was very popular at the time and played to the growing pseudo-science of

It was also featured in Nazi propaganda.

Unfortunately the lineage of the Kallikak family that led to the 'feeble minded' girl who supposedly started the investigation was a fabrication. Goddard had invented a liaison with a feedle minded barmaid as the source of the 'feeble minded' gene.

There are some dark parts of the Fediverse.
Satan does have an account but not sure if it extends to kbin. He's tried to make it inconspicuous @s8n

Also be aware of the Endless Screaming @scream@botsin.space

Also worth checking out Fox News. It's a bit different to the regular Fox News @FoxNews

For research purposes @greydesire gives a master class in the use of CWS/NSFW.

The only thing that is not tolerated on the Fediverse is hate and intolerance.

NSFW should also be used for other disturbing content such as gory pictures. Images with strong eye contact should also have an NSFW for autistic users.

Note, you only get to see properly via Mastodon.

But realistically, on Social Media what's a friend?
None of them are going to buy you a drink, go along to a gig or help you move house.

Online friends are over rated.

Canada accused of mask conspiracy

With the smoke from the Canadian wild fires drifting south into the US, citizens of New York and other cities and states are being advised to wear masks outside. Some people are not happy and can see the conspiracy.

Rob Titchener
We know this isn't going to end well, but how bad will it be?

I have a feeling that Pat Archer will be involved because of a comment she made a while back saying that she would kill him.
