Do you ever just feel like your too weird for life? The more comfortable I get with being my self, the more I feel like an alien.

I'm going through another phase of reviewing which inking tools do I like.

Bic ballpoints are very good at sketch, oil paste gives options that are like pencil without being pencil, although one thing they miss on is being held flat to engage shoulder movements. The colors are good and multipens are convenient. And I always like shading with them, that was like half of my school doodles.

Brush pens are still my favorite "finish" tool. They come in many varieties of point size and rubberiness, and get around the issue that hard felt markers have of blotting at the ends of lines. But they are very convenient and can be learned gradually, starting with the hard Tombows and moving over to softer pens as desired.

Dip pens make sharper lines than everything else I have because they can apply the most viscous ink and will cut into the paper, but are logistically harder in a number of ways - they insist on pull strokes, you have to have the bottle there and manage how much ink you're applying. They're definitely on the far end of challenging ink tools.

Fountains are a little easier to learn than dip pens, but the logistical problem has moved to making it feed correctly(not that bad - get a Pilot and stick with cartridges and the out-of-box reliability will be very high), and the ink is more feathery by default, since like rollerballs, it's water-based. Most fountain nibs aren't made to flex either, so even though it still has a pull stroke requirement, it's not the same kind of line at all.

Gels, rollerballs, and hybrid ballpoints are a lot of variations within a similar space - there are only so many ways that a ballpoint line can look. Which ones are best depends on how much you want to embrace a glassy, wet, feathered line vs control and fineness with scratchiness and skippiness - my happy medium here is still Uni 207+ Plus. For fine lines, Uniball One F gives a nice looking result but is more skippy/scratchy and sits on the surface, which keeps it sharp but also means it can be scraped off if you go over it with felt tips. For more blotty and glassy stuff, Uniball Air or Schneider One Business.

Top three, probably: Uni 207+, Uni-Pin Brush, Bic Cristal Xtra-Bold.

Yes, me too. I was so sad about Reddit. I'm just starting to explore the fediverse. It's very exciting. Change is good.
