So this morning I overwrote 11 years of comments on Reddit with this message:
In preparation for the discontinuation of Ah pall O (read it fast) I have decided to edit my posts/comments and then delete my account. Looking forward to seeing you on whatever comes next 🍻! – mass edited with https://redact.dev/
And I just had a thought. LLM / Generative AI devs and trainers are considering how to consume the massive amount of useful conversation and perspectives on Reddit, and now they will have to contend with random comments in the middle of conversations being completely unrelated to the conversation. Somebody is probably writing code to isolate and ignore these types of comments already 🤣
New here and trying to understand how this place is similar and different from reddit. Is there a good overview somewhere?
How do I subscribe/join/whatever a community? Can I private message people? What terminology do I need to know? What’s up with the following people thing?
click on magazines in the top bar on desktop. look for something you are interested in. you can use the search bar to do this. click on the "magazine" you are interested in and then on the right, click subscribe.
if you want to message a user, click the users name, then in the right side (or scroll down on mobile) find their name then click message below it. a text box will appear on the next page to message them.
Terms: kbin is the tech used to run this reddit-like webpage. it was created by @ernest. subreddits are called magazines and people post articles in them called threads. kbin, mastodon, lemmy and others are instances in the fediverse- a conglomeration of instances that use activitypub protocol to communicate or federate with one another.
you do not need to follow people, but some users may like what someone has to say so that can follow them to easily find them or where they are posting on kbin or elsewhere in the fediverse
on a desktop, click magazines at the top
search for another magazine (like fediverse@lemmy.ml or science)
in the case of science, you'll see 4 or so magazines from kbin that have no @ in the name and after you'll see science@beehaw.org (from the beehaw instance)
subscribe to that and it will now be in your subscribed feed as well as all feed
you can do this for any instances that allow federation with kbin
