@albinanigans@kbin.social

I’m a queer-for-short Black American who loves to write and doodle, and is doing their best. Also nerd-adjacent. Has been caught VTubing. Typically they/them.

spacemanspiffy,

Stop using Chromium-based browsers at all, really.

I'm not expecting perfection, but there hasn't even been visible commitment to a strong moderation policy. ernst has as far as I can tell remained mostly silent on the matter, occasionally deflecting to "tools aren't ready yet", but also not really committing to what he wants to be done with the tools.

10A is a particularly prolific problematic user, and as a single user (unlike the flood of porn spam) it's a simple matter to ban him. It should not have been a hard decision to make by now.

Personally, a bit over a month ago, I defined banning 10A (as well as one other individual) as the canary that would let me consider recommending other people come here. I was willing to give it some time, but it hasn't happened yet. Whether this is an explicit policy of weak moderation, or simply an accidental one thanks to putting it at too low a priority, I don't know. But I don't particularly want to be on a site that I don't feel comfortable recommending other people use. So I'm taking my own (lack of) recommendation for now and going to take a long break from this site.

What does blocking someone actually do?

What does blocking on kbin actually do? I’m asking because it seems incomplete, to put it mildly. If you block someone, they can still see what you post and reply to you and you’re still sent notifications of their replies, even though you can’t see the comment itself (or any replies other people make to comments of an...

And eventually, there will be issues with harassment, because that’s just how idiots on the internet are. This is something that needs to be fixed before it becomes an actual problem, I reckon.

75% reserve is an absurd ratio. If it's being held for more than a month, that's effectively an interest free loan to Etsy. No manufacturer of any size I know of would ever accept those terms without a contract that binds the supplier to purchase a set amount on a regular basis - you simply can't make money that way otherwise.

Regardless of the advantage of adding tracking to a package, the way Etsy is implementing their policy is clearly abusive to the sellers. 3% (like Amazon) would be reasonable. 75% is highway robbery.

So now you got me digging into this because I take an absurd amount of pride in my analogies, and it looks like the Meta Pixel tech they embedded was basically like the standard Google Analytics tracking tag on most websites. The hospitals were stupid to install it on their password protected pages, but they were also misled in the fact that Meta's Pixel took far more data than a standard tracking tag, claimed they weren't tracking sensitive data when they were, then claimed to filter the data even though their engineers admitted they couldn't:

The Markup was unable to confirm whether any of the data referenced in this story was in fact removed before being stored by Meta. However, a recent joint investigation with Reveal found that Meta’s sensitive health information filtering system didn’t block information about appointments a reporter requested with crisis pregnancy centers.

Internally, Facebook employees have been blunt about how well—or not so well—the company generally protects sensitive data.

“We do not have an adequate level of control and explainability over how our systems use data, and thus we can’t confidently make controlled policy changes or external commitments such as ‘we will not use X data for Y purpose.’ ” Facebook engineers on the ad and business product team wrote in a 2021 privacy overview that was leaked to Vice.

So, to perfect the analogy, this would be like a hotel installing security cameras in their rooms, and then finding out the company that makes the cameras and runs the network is selling porn starring its customers. Not only that, now that the porn is in their system, it can't be adequately filtered or removed.

The hotel is stupid and liable, but the security company is just flat out vile.

Ok, I'm done. Have an upvote for putting up with that ;)

kbin Enhancement Suite: a community-curated script manager that lets you customize your kbin experience

A couple of weeks ago, @shazbot made this post about a project that they were working on. Since then, @shazbot, @ori, @minnieo and I have been hard at work, and we are excited to finally announce the official release of kbin Enhancement Suite (KES)!...

Honestly, it's a great question! While kbin is open source, making userscripts allows you to iterate on changes and get updates out very quickly. It's also much easier to start making userscripts than it is to contribute directly to the project, since you only really need to be familiar with JS, HTML, and CSS. To contribute to kbin, you need to be familiar with PHP and Twig, and set up your own instance for testing your changes.

Plus, while kbin is open source, not every single change will be merged, and there will likely always be features "missing" from it. Userscripts also give you a ton of freedom and flexibility in how you use sites, so you could make crazy changes that aren't remotely possible to merge into it.

Hope that answers your questions!

Mitigations, until a fix is deployed
You can block the domain go to https://kbin.social/d/<domainname> and click on the block icon in the sidebar.

Or

Get the kbin echancement script (https://greasyfork.org/en/scripts/468612-kbin-enhancement-script) which allows you to block known NSFW domains and hide the random sidebar completely

i personally like the random mags bc it helps me discover more magazines that i never knew existed. i click stuff in there often. however, it should be optional for people like you who’d rather not see it.

in the mean time i recommend floating subs panel which is a script that puts your subscriptions on a floating panel to the left, it is collapsible. (and if you’re inclined, a customizable user style i made to make it prettier)

and as an alternative you could also try this script that does the same thing, just visually different.

What game is too terrifying to finish for you?

Mine is Silent Hill 3. Its subject matter revolves around the fears of a teenage girl, like death of a parent, puberty, unwanted pregnancy (with a demon fetus, no less), mirrors (THAT ROOM shivers), and stalkers. The atmosphere is so oppressive and I cant play the game without having something else playing in the background, its...

Not quite an answer to your question, but if you enjoy horror games but don't want to be too spooked yourself, I highly recommend the OhItsRobinM channel on YouTube and Twitch. She plays horror games and is absolutely unphased. She makes them bearable to watch for me.

It's really so sad and frustrating for those under the age of 45. Millennials were raised during a time of prosperity and possibilities, only to find out it was all a sham by the selfish, stupid and mostly older generations. Now Millennials, Gen Z and Gen A will reap the outcomes of all that while those who caused it will die off before things get even worse. I harbor no resent towards Gen X, but their refusal to fight the tide certainly didn't help.

thesebits,

as a genXer we were promised and viewed all that could be done and was being done. then they voted in Reagan and was all stripped away. any glimpse of prosperity during the 90s was GenX optimism that was destroyed in 2000 when it was all stolen from everyone again. GenX doesn't do anything anymore because we were told to shut up as we grew up in the 80s and then had it stolen again in the 2000 election.

I never was much of a Twitter user (and if we're being honest, that carried over to Mastodon) but after about 30 seconds on Threads I hated being bombarded with posts from people I didn't know or care to know desperately trying to attract followers on the new platform. Threads is (unsurprisingly) making itself into a clone of late-stage Twitter, instead of Twitter back in the day. Hard pass

We really need a way to block communities on mobile without having to actually enter them.

I’m sure there are ways to do this on desktop, but in mobile, as far as I can tell, if I come across a nsfw community on my thread and I want to block I, I can’t do that without first clicking on the link to the community feed.

kglitch,

There are over 70 kbin instances. If kbin.social is not to your liking, you can find another. https://fedidb.org/software/kbin

https://kglitch.social has defederated from Meta (well, blocked the domains that meta is expected to use). Registrations are open.
