I actually disagree with this being an example of why seeing downvotes is bad. I also think it's good we can see which mod is doing the banning; I've noticed the standard lemmy moderation log doesn't show that. This kind of transparency allows for poor behaviour to be discovered more quickly and remedied with less speculation about who did what.

Edit: For example, I can also see this person has gone through your entire comment history and downvoted every comment. I didn't see any troll-like comments from you though. I hope this person is doing OK mentally, but this isn't OK community leader behaviour on their part.

Edit 2: I can also see that OP has downvoted every single one of the other person's comments too. On the same day as the other person did to OP. Uh... I don't know what conversation spawned this entire exchange, but I dont think that downvoting all someone's comments outside of their contexts is productive.

Edit 3: And for the couple of other accounts who are going through the post histories of the people involved and downvoting because of this thread? Also not helpful behaviour. Be better.

This is why we can't have nice things.

fiat_lux,

My goodness that is cute. It's only a big as a small snowball 🥺

fiat_lux,

It's a start! Hopefully we will see more leadership everywhere that better resembles the communities they represent. For all the categories of human diversity.

Little wins like this pave the way.

fiat_lux,

Omnomnom.

If I could suggest though, while the little one is still little, training to only chew on toys and not people. It will save your hands and other body parts in the future from cats who decide biting you is a great way to get attention. Especially when you're sleeping.

[Via cat@lemmy.world] Door with Cat Door, North Door of Exeter Cathedral, 14th century, feat. Stapledon the Cathedral Cat. (lemmy.world)

“This 14th century door at Exeter Cathedral, UK, is thought to be the oldest existing cat flap A cat was paid a penny each week, to keep down the rats and mice in the north tower, and a cat flap was cut into the door below the astronomical clock to allow the cat to carry out its duties. Records of payments were entered in the...

fiat_lux,

Gorgeous, even though I wasn't expecting it to sound like the generic fantasy and medieval village scene-setting music from every game, movie and TV show ever.

fiat_lux,

Honestly, I'm not sure. Privacy has always been a spectrum, but we're now living in a world where it's near impossible to get close to 100% privacy for any action from the start. I suspect the current possible remedies are "ensuring the people and organisations which use/abuse surveillance are heavily regulated and compliance heavily enforced" which ironically requires transparency.

Realistically there needs to be lengthy legal procedures to grant authorities and companies use of such techniques. Legislation like that is complicated and slow to develop though. It also risks pinning the core privacy concepts to specific versions of specific tech, which complicates its enforcement over time.

Even if it is very illegal to do this to someone though, there will always be people who use it for whatever purposes. Obviously making it illegal under wiretapping laws without explicit opt-in consent to do it is something that would need to happen. I'd also like to see mandatory source attribution laws.

That won't stop everyone though. Which means we maybe need to start looking into comstruction legislation to ensure RF blocking materials are used in external wall construction. If that is an effective remedy to Van Eck phreaking at all. I have no idea what resolution information can be determined from devices that aren't purpose built broadcasting and receiving devices.

And all of that requires good-will and sensible decisions from the existing legal systems and legislators. Which can't be completely achieved, and in many cases is... currently very poor.

Tl;dr A very hard problem which will need work from a bunch of different parts of society and likely cannot be completely solved for all people. The only solution for this specific technique right now I think is to go fully off-grid with no electricity. Even then though you'll still have satellites and drones to intrude.

fiat_lux,

You'll find heaps of mostly terrible replicas of this ring with the search "anima dulcis vivas mecum ring". If you're happy for low accuracy there are also some 3d models floating around.

The weird thing is the ring in the photo, assuming it is the original, says "mecu" instead of "mecum" which is "with me". It's the only word using a Latin abbreviation, I guess the jeweller didn't quite have room. So search for both 'mecu' and 'mecum' I guess.

The ring itself is apparently in a private collection now though, so no chance of more photos.

fiat_lux,

Aw man, you just found my next birthday present to myself. And Christmas. And the next birthday...

I'm going to have to stick to the cheaper corroded stuff, but I can own an actual little Roman penis amulet.

Edit: On second thought, they don't even try to list provenance. Perhaps this is too unethical. Bummer.

fiat_lux,

Yeah I checked that. While they defined provenance and accurately explained why it's hard to get good provenance records, I didn't see anything which indicated they try to ethically source things.

I'd have no problem buying if the funds benefited research and they are actually excess from proper digs, not just looted goods that are not very useful now they lack context.

Even if I am so very very tempted to buy a Byzantine grenade, to try to discover the recipe for Greek Fire.

fiat_lux,

I have two historical items, neither worth more than $20 or has other significant value. I spent more than 10 times the cost on getting museum-grade framing for one of them so I could display it and not destroy it. The other is 20th century and was mass produced, but is kept in conservation-appropriate conditions nonetheless.

Anything extra I get would be equally treasured, but I can't fund destruction any more than I already have. If only it were easier to get reproductions from the rightful owners!

New insights into the origin of the Indo-European languages (phys.org)

An international team of linguists and geneticists led by researchers from the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig has achieved a significant breakthrough in our understanding of the origins of Indo-European, a family of languages spoken by nearly half of the world’s population. The work is published...

fiat_lux,

Very cool. I love the Max Planck Institute. The small part of the map that I have personal connection to has historical accounts that reflect these migration flows.

I wonder if you could develop a relatively accurate map of recent human migration just by having a long chat with every village's local historian.

I also hope we can start doing these for the other languages branches soon.
