Thinking about buying more storage. Warn me of the lemons!

Anyone got any recommendations or warnings about specific hdd / ssd / storage brands or models at the moment? Thinking about buying another drive instead of being smart and cleaning up my files. I've been pretty happy with Samsung but I've heard they had a clunker of a drive with high failure rates lately. HDD, SSD and I think I...

Who is doing the most good in the world, and how?

My feed is filled with bad news, which is my fault for using the fediverse as a news feed, but it made me wonder: Which organisations, groups or individual people in the world are doing the most good for our world? I'm particularly interested in those who manage to do good on a larger impact scale (quantity or quality), but if...

[NSW] Police frequently ignore Coroner's Office and Law Enforcement Conduct Commission about over-representation of Aboriginal people in criminal justice system, contradict own goals, don't report required data, & other failures. (12ft.io)

The title for the 12ft link to the SMH article is "Police should not be responsible for Closing the Gap targets, says commissioner", which is accurate, but even after a quick skim of the actual report, seems to very much understate the problems. This quote buried in the report is an example:...

October special : Stele of the Serpent King "Djet" . One of the oldest known tomb stelae (sort of a gravestone). Limestone, c. 2820 BCE, Abydos, Egypt 🎃🪦🐍 (commons.m.wikimedia.org)

Round-topped gravestone-like limestone slab carved with the image of a falcon sitting on top a tall rectangle. Inside the top of the rectangle is a snake. The bottom half resembles the outside of an Egyptian palace. The photo is overexposed to enhance contrast in the bas-relief carving.

[Via cat@lemmy.world] Door with Cat Door, North Door of Exeter Cathedral, 14th century, feat. Stapledon the Cathedral Cat. (lemmy.world)

“This 14th century door at Exeter Cathedral, UK, is thought to be the oldest existing cat flap A cat was paid a penny each week, to keep down the rats and mice in the north tower, and a cat flap was cut into the door below the astronomical clock to allow the cat to carry out its duties. Records of payments were entered in the...
