The NHC has issued its Tropical Cyclone Report for an unnamed subtropical storm which formed off the eastern coast of the United States in January 2023 (www.nhc.noaa.gov)

As part of its routine post-operational review, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) occasionally identifies previously undesignated tropical or subtropical cyclones from new data or meteorological interpretation. The NHC re-analysis has concluded that a low that developed over the Gulf Stream during mid-January became a...

Moderator note

I'm using this opportunity to test Markdown formatting.

So far, it appears that tables are broken (they were working last week). Additionally, you can't use bold text in hyperlinks.

Oh well, growing pains and all that.

EDIT: Looks like there isn't a way to pin comments yet.

The Reddit version of this post can be found here.

(AHA! You have to put the bold text formatting on the outside of the entire hyperlink block.)

Things I can't replicate right now:

1. Sidebar graphics. It doesn't look like there's currently a way to customize anything in the sidebar besides the community rules and the community icon. I can force some creative tweaks using userstyles, but the same CSS code does not work in the Appearance section of the magazine panel.

2. Post flair. Kbin doesn't seem to have an equivalent to post flair at the moment, so keeping users updated on the current intensity of a cyclone will be challenging. It does appear that thread titles can be changed, so that might end up being useful.

3. Tables in posts. Kbin doesn't support markdown tables right now, so the observation and forecast tables in tracking posts would have to be formatted differently than on Reddit.

Test image

I guess I could use images, too.

They're collapsed by default, though.

4. Article images. I guess I can assign an image to an article, and I can continuously update that image. However, I haven't exactly figured out what size the image is supposed to be and every time I think I have it, I log off and come back hours later to the image being all squashed or stretched.

Looks like I figured out sidebar graphics... but it's a flimsy workaround involving HTML heading elements.

Additionally, in order to make them work, I have to rehost the image elsewhere and edit the stylesheet every time I need to update the graphic.

An Evaluation of NHC Service Enhancements, Part 1: Potential Tropical Cyclone Advisories (noaanhc.wordpress.com)

Tropical cyclone (TC) formation near land is among the more difficult scenarios for forecasters, emergency managers, and the general public to contend with during the hurricane season. In the past, these situations were challenging from a public warning and hazard communication perspective because tropical storm and/or...
