I am here to help build and support vibrant communities not controlled by Big Tech that help others solve problems, examine new ways of thinking and improve their quality of life.

Are lots of websites really going downhill and/or closing or does it just seem like it to me?

Like many people I'm here because of reddit going to shit. Twitter has increasingly been shit. gycat is shutting down in September. To me it seems like lots of bastions of social media are crumpling, but as a previous active reddit user, I've been personally effected. Is this just a frequency illusion or has something changed...

Yeah. It's like it's 2000 in the Bay Area all over again.

What I think kbin needs to do to survive, and why I think it has a better chance than any other Reddit alternative I've seen yet.

I’m a Reddit refugee who was on that platform for 10+ years. I saw not just a tremendous amount of controversies, but attempts at introducing alternatives to Reddit during all of them. The 2015 blackout saw a ton of alternatives suggested, and if you go back and look at them many have either not survived or never achieved...

Well-said! You are right on the money. The kinds of people Reddit upset are the ones who have the will, the motive and the know-how to build something better.

Ugh. You've started the horrible puns.

we're still here because we find corporate control over the forum-space to be "oppressive"

It's bad when any corporation does that to anyone, regardless of respective points of view.

Metro rail has its place, particularly in large metropolitan areas. $20 to go from San Diego to Oceanside with AC outlets yet without I-5 traffic is superb. I'm a fan of the WMATA Metro (DC area) as well.

For an inter-city high-speed offering, I'm fairly skeptical. We have Amtrak and compared to air travel it costs just as much yet takes several times as long to move me across the country. It would have to be a high-volume route with a proven market for me to support it.

At least 2 dead, 28 injured in mass shooting at Baltimore block party (www.cbsnews.com)

An 18-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene, and a 20-year-old man was pronounced dead later at a local hospital. Nine of the people injured were transported to hospitals from the scene, while the other 20 victims walked into various hospitals in the area. A suspect has not been arrested in connection with the mass...

Am I missing something? My not-yet-updated Infinity for Android app still loads Reddit.

There are plenty of alt-tech platforms that will take over. yawn

blake, (edited ) to random

I got some Onn brand walkie talkies intending to use them in the mountains (which we did!). I'm learning all about how they work, including the privacy codes. Now I'm falling down the rabbit hole of #FRS (low power walkies like the ones I have) and #GMRS, and #CB and #HamRadio are on my radar now...

@blake Now you're hopelessly addicted.

Welcome!

Got a friend looking to move to West Michigan and is in need of a network engineer position in or around Kalamazoo to Grand Rapids.
If you have any leads, let me know.

@notsle Let me know how they succeed. I was born and raised in GR, live in Kzoo, graduated HS from Northview and college from Western with over a decade of IT networking experience and I still haven't pulled it off.

Does anyone else hope the bulk of Reddit stays there?

I think my favorite thing about Lemmy is that it feels like Reddit used to. Less negativity, more engaged users (I think). I know it will be fun to watch Reddit die, but if I put spite aside what I’m really mad at Reddit about is more about what Reddit became and maybe part of that is when the general internet user started...

The best thing we can do is forget about that site and move on. It used to be just a handful of us every few years who left. It was laughable. Today anyone who looks at the stats is not laughing.

EDIT: All right. I do check on that site from time-to-time, and given a compelling reason I post there. My answer above is given in the context of responding to someone who has hurt you deeply.

First off, I'm sure Reddit had all kinds of kinks it had to work out when it began. Everything does.

Second, the explosive growth of lemmy.world, kbin.social and the other instances speaks for itself.

Trolls gonna troll. We've moved on.
