misericordiae,

Discovered the trailer was up last night. Excited for the new season!

If you've already listened to the series and want more, there are additional audio drama stories (sorry for the fandom link) in the same universe. The standalones and Mythos are on the soundcloud of the writer, Julian Simpson, and the Aldritch Kemp stories are on BBC Sounds as part of Limelight (you'll have to scroll through to find it).

misericordiae,

Glad you enjoyed them!

Agreed, new season was great. It seemed shorter, I thought, (although the run time was the same as previous seasons), but maybe that's because I binged it.

Just finished reading Annihilation - strange book

After seeing it on the list in this thread, I decided to read Annihilation, and I just finished it. As others said it’s weird (I like weird, so it’s one of the reasons I wanted to read it). The writing style really reminded me of H.P. Lovecraft, which is to say it’s a bit stilted. I’m glad I read it - it’s an...

misericordiae,

I saw the movie first, then read the book after hearing it was different/maybe better, since aside from the bear, I found the movie fairly whelming. I ended up really enjoying the book, particularly the dream-like style. Authority, however, I found... really slow. I was intrigued by the premise, and the reveals were interesting, but the pacing was just glacial, imo, and it did away with what I'd liked about Annihilation. I did start Acceptance afterward, but was sort of over it at that point, and never finished it.

misericordiae,

Hey, just so you know, waveform.social is gone--this is, I guess, a ghost community now. Kinda weird people can still post to it.

I wish I could recommend a replacement, but none of the synthwave communities I've found are very active.

misericordiae,

Despite the first book winning the 2021 SPSFC (admittedly, a much less well-known competition than the SPFBO), I almost never see the Primaterre series by S.A. Tholin mentioned. They are doorstoppers, but very well paced, imo: I inhaled the first two books. If you like space opera that manages to avoid a lot of plot tropes, give the series a try!

(Sidenote: if you're put off by the "cosmic horror" label on the first book, I recall there being a couple of mildly gory scenes, but it's mostly in the realm of "unfathomably alien" rather than trying to scare.)

David Bowie - Lady Stardust
There's so many good Bowie songs from the 70s to choose from.

misericordiae,

The War on Drugs - Suffering

Actually found this harder than expected--most of the songs I associate with summer are the wrong genre, or became super mainstream. But I played this album extensively one summer, and this song in particular has that warm, stuffy evening vibe for me.
