I’ve been meaning to rewatch Donnie Darko ever since I watched Dark.

“Richard Kelly is mainly known as the Donnie Darko guy.” Joe Bob, you oughta ask Steve Kilbey about Under the Milky Way.

bk1e,
@bk1e@mastodon.social avatar

Donnie Darko did not introduce me to The Church (band). I remember buying my copy of “Starfish” (along with Peter Murphy’s “Deep”) from a mail order CD club around 1990-1992. I also remember the song “Metropolis” getting some radio play.

Hey everybody, have you heard the news? Joe Bob is back in town!

I'm ready to start Summer School.

bk1e,

@onelson I mentally file Ghost World in the same hash table bucket as Donnie Darko. Similar feelings of isolation and mix of humor, scenery-chewing, and deadly serious parts.

It may also be because I saw a poster for Donnie Darko at the theater when I watched Ghost Workd in the fall of 2001 (but didn’t watch Donnie Darko it until the DVD got popular).

The flute part in Fabio Frizzi’s soundtrack to Lucio Fulci’s film “The Beyond” always reminds me of “Tubular Bells”.

The Beyond: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M6FJSoBDM0c&t=1632s
Tubular Bells: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bv_4sZCLlr0&t=1956s

(Edit: oops, I deleted too much tracking crap from the URLs)

bk1e,
@bk1e@mastodon.social avatar

This also happens with Goblin’s soundtrack to Dario Argento’s “Deep Red”, except in that case the part that sounds like Tubular Bells is like 1/3rd of the film.

So a while ago eBay introduced AI-generated descriptions, which works exactly as well as you’d expect: not at all.

The main effect has been that descriptions on eBay from private sellers are now largely useless as they don’t bother to write anything themselves but let AI write empty paragraphs of absolute midness that don’t tell you anything.

bk1e,
@bk1e@mastodon.social avatar

@thomasfuchs Are the descriptions generated with eBay’s AI tool all marked “Generated with eBay.ai”? For every one of those, I find 10x as many that are not labeled but which sound like ChatGPT regurgitating a catalog page.

@teajaygrey There’s a Trac ticket saying it’s not really deleted and at least one other package has the same problem: https://trac.macports.org/ticket/70131

#NowWatching The Legend of Boggy Creek (1972)

This one is remarkable because (if I am not mistaken) it's the very first "bigfoot movie."

I don't actually know if it's good, but being the first is something.

bk1e,
@bk1e@mastodon.social avatar

@onelson Did you watch the Boggy Creek segment from the Last Drive In 2018 marathon? I did the “switching between Just Joe Bob and another streaming app” thing, so it was even more of a slog, but I probably wouldn’t have finished the movie otherwise.

I found Pierce’s “The Town That Dreaded Sundown” much more entertaining (despite the unexpected/off-tone attempts at slapstick comedy).

Idea I am not sure whether I like: Normalize saying "200" as a response to "how are you doing?", as in "200 OK". In this proposal this would be a somewhat weaker alternative to saying "okay" because it communicates only "no active errors". "How are you doing?" "Nominal"
