Love that we here in Germany are basically prohibited from getting vaccinations, even voluntarily, unless we meet certain condition – mostly age and existing illness.

“You first have to get LongCOVID before we allow you vaccinations to avoid the thing you got” is bad policy. https://zirk.us/@AlexKourvo/112469763159775160

I really wish box fans existed in europe

yatil,
@yatil@yatil.social avatar

@eniko They are not super common, but they do exist, for example here at Amazon Germany: https://www.amazon.de/Newlux-Industrieller-Bodenventilator-Aluminiumrahmen-Kupfermotor/dp/B0B1MRGSHQ/ref=sr_1_21

We’re now seven episodes into (2023) and there have been two I already consider all time classics (Wild Blue Yonder and Boom), and none of the others have been duds (although I’ve had problems with some). I like this version of the show!

yatil,
@yatil@yatil.social avatar

@tom I want to agree, but to me it feels very much RTD doing RTD stuff and we already had that. Tennant specials felt a little different, but these four episodes don’t. I really hope it gels together for me as the season progresses.

I am happy that this seems to be a “me” thing and other people are very happy 🙂

The European Parliamentary Elections are during CSS Day so I've just arranged to vote in Amsterdam (with Kiezerspas).

This is an important vote. Collectively we've got to cast a lot of votes on parties that are not extreme right, and (personal opinion) prioritise very ambituous climate policy over nonsensical anti migrant populism.

yatil,
@yatil@yatil.social avatar

@hdv @sarajw The idea is that the election can be on traditional election days in individual countries. I already have my vote-by-mail ballots here (it coincides with 6 local elections, too).

I’m leading a three hour workshop for a client in person. The company is very casual.

My instinct is to wear a suit, but they’re so casual, I worry it could come off weird.

I could do business casual.

I don’t know. Opinions welcome.

yatil,
@yatil@yatil.social avatar

@lexfri I’m so glad that has never really been a consideration for me, mostly because I don’t have a reputation for dressing well. A podcast or metal t-shirt and a hoodie is usually just dressed up enough. If I want do be more formal, I go black jeans, t-shirt and suit jacket (the latter of which I usually get rid of after like hour one).

My schedule got away from me this week, so we'll be dealing with "The Devil's Chord" in timey-wimey fashion early NEXT week. "Boom" tomorrow. (There's always a boom tomorrow.)

@ThatChipGuy OMG, it’s already time for Boom tomorrow? What is this week? How does time work?

(Also thanks for your podcast essays, enjoyable as always!)

Be My Eyes has a lot of goodwill in the community – and rightly so. I would also think that exploring how to make their systems better with “AI” recognition makes sense. I have no problem with any of that (as long as it is ethical, affordable, reliable).

But if they participate in producing an advertisement video with “AI” claims that are impossible to verify, then it should be OK to be skeptical about it, especially with the deceiving claims that “AI” companies regularly make.

yatil,
@yatil@yatil.social avatar

@twynn That’s one reason for being skeptical. It just feels too perfect, and I would love to know real-world performance and such.

yatil, (edited ) to random
@yatil@yatil.social avatar

Will we honestly talk about the trickery in the “Be My Eyes Accessibility with GPT-4o“ video? Like the taxi that uses the signal way before the passenger signal and actually basically passed the signalling passenger before the signal and still coming to a stop? Or that we don’t see any real processing time? Or that the voice is clear despite standing in London with speakers on? (1/3)

yatil,
@yatil@yatil.social avatar

(Also “what do the ducks do” – “normal duck things”, “is the king in” – “maybe, it looks like the flag is an indicator for that”, and “recognize a London taxi, one of the most recognizable things in the world” are not THAT impressive…)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KwNUJ69RbwY (3/3)

yatil,
@yatil@yatil.social avatar

Not to mention the condescending tone of “great job hailing that taxi” when it was at best a mediocre job of doing so.

Do I think this is a good demo what might be possible in a number of years? Sure. But selling this as “this is the technology now” is just deceptive and gross. Sorry. (2/3)

yatil,
@yatil@yatil.social avatar

@Lottie @pixelate So this was a random taxi, on a random street, the taxi driver didn’t know they would be flagged down, the person behind the filming camera did not do the flagging down, and it worked the first time? I’m just skeptical, critical. My thread isn’t even negative, I just find it deceptive to present this as “today’s tech” when it obviously isn’t. Because I think it hurts more than it helps.

yatil,
@yatil@yatil.social avatar

@Lottie @bornach @pixelate It’s just not clear from the video what is real and in real time and what is a voice over, or filmed multiple times. It’s an advertisement. Actors don’t know what happens in the edit. We don’t know if the scenarios were picked by the production (and if the software had been optimized for those use cases). It’s just so many unknowns.

yatil,
@yatil@yatil.social avatar

@technocounselor Asking about the validity of marketing claims is not “party pooping”.

yatil,
@yatil@yatil.social avatar

@Lottie @bornach @pixelate Which I can totally understand and that is beside the point of my post. The technology, if it is available widely (not cost prohibitive) and reliably (no false positives), would be great. I can still question the presentation and form of advertisement, I think.

yatil,
@yatil@yatil.social avatar

@technocounselor I mean, we know that venture-backed “AI” companies mislead all the time about the capabilities of their software. The AI pin where they claimed it could tell you the calories in a hand of almonds, and it just guessed a wrong number. The Google demo where they cut out multiple seconds of response time and then re-synced the answers to the video. This is comon. That’s why I’m skeptical. Also asking questions is not irresponsible.

yatil,
@yatil@yatil.social avatar

@technocounselor I think we’re not even in the same country.

Please read this as what it is: anecdotal evidence. But it tells you a lot about the current status of computer science education in Germany.

My son’s teacher insists that an if statement always also needs an else.
Always.
Empty, if need be.
He wrote an empty else { }.

@matthiasott @bastianallgeier (Technically what got me two free hours for a few months was that I explained that it’s easier to use CSS if you put IE out of quirksmode using a Doctype, and that we didn’t need to learn CSS differences. Ah, those were the days.)
