@SuneAuken@rvps2001 Technically speaking there is a distinction here between jus ad bellum and jus in bello. Even if the war as a whole is illegal, they still have to follow the rules of war in how they do it.
The stupid thing is of course that if French soldiers are fighting on the battlefield, then obviously they are legitimate targets. That is what it means to be a combatant.

So the whole thing amounts to, "We shouldn't be in this war in the first place, but if you send soldiers at us, we'll still shoot at them" or something to that effect.
