Same here. Busy prepping for the end of my Reddit days and said I'd hitch my wagon here while I could still get a username without undersores or numbers.
Same here! I was originally looking into lemmy and saw kbin mentioned a few times in relation to the sub being banned, checked it out and decided to stay.
Same. I initially switched to Squabbles but I prefer the UI here. Lemmy was too confusing with dodgy admins and Tildes doesn't want to embrace the horde, so I'm here.
Exactly why I made an account over here. I checked this place out yesterday, was iffy on it, then today saw the ban post and figured if they're trying to silence the main hub of talk about a competitor then it might be worth making an account and sticking around.
Me too, have been on Mastodon since 2018 but for some reason never looked at Lemmy or kbin.
Joined a Lemmy instance a couple of weeks ago but that’s just defederated and will shut down, so I’ve applied to join another instance.
Following the disastrous reddit AMA, which revealed the sheer disregard that Reddit has for its users and the third party apps that are needed, I decided to join kbin as well.
So far I’m enjoying Kbin very much.
I won’t use Reddit during the shutdown but will occasionally peak in after the 14th, but only to see if sense has prevailed. If it hasn’t then come June 30th, I’ll delete all my posts from Reddit and then delete the account.
I came over after the AMA. From what I've heard on the grapevine reddit can restore your last deleted comment. I want my content gone from reddit so I plan on editing all of my comments to Thank you u/spez your nightmare of an AMA. It showed your true colours. Your direct behavior is the reason I am leaving reddit. Then i'll delete my account. I think power delete suite allows you to mass edit comments.
The recent interviews with u/spez convinced me that he is either incompetent or malicious. I’ve deleted my account early. It’s liberating to be away. There are reports of Reddit reverting deleted/edited posts.
I would much rather go broke trying to maintain a boat, I could sail around in style until it sank under me, Jack Sparrow-style. Cars just run out of gas or oil or coolant or whatever- no style there.
Simply storing and maintaining a whole boat is way more of a logistical nightmare than I ever want to deal with for a supposed "leisure" activity. And that's before we get into the cost.
As a naturally private person, I’ll always limit the leakage of personal details, but I will say that I’ve always been an early adopter of tech, and that I’m quite excited about the prospect of replacing Spezzit with a federated alternative that we all fully control together.
Fuck power, fuck growth, fuck profit. We can all do better than that if we chose to make it so. Humanity made the present. We fucked it, and only we can unfuck it. No political or economic system is forever.
Ummmm got off on a rant there. Whatever. Seems like an honest way to intro myself. Greetings all.
No - because there's no need for politician then, is there?
Part of a good politician's job is to try an take the often conflicting demands of their consitutents, e.g "better services", "lower taxes", "no debt please" or "an end to global climate change - but no inconvenience for me please" and try to shape them into a consistent, workable set of policies. They should also try to lead to an extent - being a person who explains positions, trade-offs and up-coming unplreasant truths that the electorate need to think about.
Yes, this is an idealistic view - but politicians like that do exist.
A politician who simply says: "You want that? we'll do that" based on a never-ending series of referenda isn't much use it anyone.
I hear you, and these are good points. I was looking to strike a middle ground where the leadership of the politician could still be in play, but they'd be provided with dynamic voter input that would guide their decisions in a more democratic manner. Right now, particularly in the US, politicians only pay attention to their voters at election time, and only to those who help them win, and they can only win with the money that those who want influence over the politician donate. However, if instead of relying on campaign funds, they had a tool to keep in synch with their voters more effectively, it could blunt the power of wealthy individuals to corrupt the democratic process.
Post divorce me is a different person than pre divorce. My results in court were pretty good for a man, but I was dragged through it and all my ex's bullshit was taken very seriously. I am much less trusting now and generally think people suck. I have much less patience for bullshit.
If it's a given that I have enough money to afford maintenance and insurance, I'd go with fancy car. At first I thought I'd go with the boat, since I live near a couple of busy bodies of water, but I'm not sure I'd want to go through the hassle of setting up a business with just one boat.
ok I will take car then which in my case would be a decked out 4 wheel drive sportsmobile. Im tempted to choose a super yacht but even for free I likely could not afford to upkeep it. You would need to pay a crew. Anything small enough boat wise to afford and I would rather have the sportsmobile.
This is important; if I live on the houseboat then that seems like an obvious answer but if I can't, I'll get far more use out of a car. A boat is just a logistics problem unless it's where I live.
On the other hand, it seems like it would be much easier, when necessary, to hook an RV up to electrical, water, and sewer services, as compared to a houseboat. I guess you could have a deionized water pump, but those are super slow, like on the order of a tablespoon an hour slow. And, anyway, I suspect it's not kosher to just poop off the railing.
I figure that there are maintenance and utility hookups for boats, just like there are for RVs. After all, plenty of boats cannot be reasonably removed from the water.
A friend of mine lived on his boat with his girlfriend and their cat. Moored in Seattle. Cost him a third of my rent for moorage + showers + wifi + hookups.
/r/place is expected to come back on the 23rd of June, which is Reddit's 18th anniversary.
You'll note that this is also conveniently a week before the API changes go into effect, so I'm planning to, as spez would put it, make some more noise by putting a message right on the middle of the canvas highlighting their bad decision. Time will tell if I'm successful in this endeavor. So far, I have dragged a couple of hundred people and some change into this mess of a plan and The Swarm is going to be backing us up as well, in the manner you'd expect from the group behind the appearance of the black void in the previous iterations of /r/place.
Hahaha I wish we were that cool, the Green Lattice is just a community that formed in r/place in 2017. We build a green and black grid pattern, hence "Green Lattice".
The Swarm (or as it's more commonly known, The Void) exists pretty much solely to destroy stuff, their goal is to cover everything in black.
Programming and Art have been my go-tos for a long time.
I have a very ad-hoc method of doing things and splitting my time is the only way to utilize my energy. Like my head hurts after programming for a few days, so I draw nonsense or cute stuff.
Lately I have been taking up mechanical stuff and trying to fix a junker car I bought, it's a nightmare, but I'm starting to understand it a little bit.
Some other hobbies I dabble in a lot but don't really have a lot of experience or skills are
Making bags and sewing
Playing the keyboard
Learning DAWs
Making synths from scratch (It's hard)
I literally would not have a life without hobbies and new things. I am so into productivity that I kinda lost interest in gaming and movies and other such forms of entertainment. It's not a great position to be in but it helps distract me from the crap in life, y'know?
I also have this ad-hoc thing, it's a gift and a curse.
On the one hand it leads to having more hobbies and spreading out your interests, on the other hand it's harder to dive in very deep on some hobby.
Overall I think it's been beneficial, I gain something from every hobby I go through and the memory is always there if I want to return to it, even if it doesn't feel like it at first.
I would start by checking into the public magazine list. Unfortunately you will find a lot of sparsely populated magazines, but it is up to us to create new content to help make this place worth sticking around for as well. There are however some active ones out there, and I'm sure you will find a few worth subscribing for! That said, thank you so much for contributing this to the community. I'm looking forward to reading others opinions on some of the best communities the fediverse has to offer.
I think same as many new people here. When I saw the news about Apollo it left a really bad taste in my mouth. It's funny, I switched from Alien Blue to the official reddit app years ago (as they intended) and while I've been increasingly annoyed with the official app it wasn't enough to deter me. When I saw the news about Apollo I was finally annoyed enough to delete the official app and switch to Apollo for its final month and got a glimpse at what I was missing out on. I also knew the clock was ticking to find a new home.
I started reading into reddit alternatives, looked at a few and saw stuff about lemmy and the fediverse. Tried to go to lemmy and couldn't connect, I assume because they had the same traffic surge as all the reddit alternatives. Then I saw the kbin migration subreddit was banned and decided to try out kbin. Here I am.
