achay,

Terrible article, full of it:

  • "In ye olden days" -> 2008 looks very "olden days" to me. I've been trying to use Wayland since the "ye olden days".
  • "Wayland wasn’t designed to be a drop-in replacement": From Wikipedia: Wayland is developed by a group of volunteers initially led by Kristian Høgsberg as a free and open-source community-driven project with the aim of replacing the X Window System.
  • "X11 was a bad platform" (protocol? Xfree86/Xorg platforms?), but it did work back then and it does work today, I've been personally using it since 1995.
  • GNOME and KDE didn't "quickly rise" to fix anything. There were plenty of toolkits. KDE and GNOME won popularity after several years. That's marketing power. Enlightenment was way prettier than both of them.
  • "Linux isn't a platform": There are plenty of X11 applications, you can google them, and Linux is a platform, any OS is a platform.
  • "Wrap up": If there are no X applications, why do you need an XWayland?

I happen to like gaming, is SDL working fine with Wayland? (last time I checked it required many contortions).
Very recently (days ago), I tried to switch from X11 to Wayland at work (again, I should have known better). My system is acting weird and I'll probably come back to X11 very soon.

Wayland is a 16-year-old project that failed to deliver on time. It only survives because of the big dollars behind it keep pushing it forward.
Since IBM took care of it, I would say keep an eye on the horizon, because we already need a Wayland replacement.

I think this was a paid article or with commercial interests.

Snarwin,

It looks like the article's answer to the question in the title is essentially "yes, but someday, eventually, it won't."

Personally, I look forward to the day when "Wayland-and-Pipewire-and-Portals" is a mature platform, and I can switch over to it without too much fuss. Until that day comes, though, I'll be sticking with Xorg.

orcrist,

This is a nice overview for people who haven’t followed the changes much.
